The root of www.xpunlimited.com does contain the file index.html

Everything works when starting apache. However, after a couple of hours or days,
when requesting http://www.xpunlimited.com or http://www.xpunlimited.com/ the
result is not that apache services the index.html, but the 403 error page. The
error log contains:
[Thu Oct 19 20:50:48 2006] [error] [client 62.177.162.19] Directory index
forbidden by rule: /var/www/html/xpunlimited/

I have found the following work around:
- stop apache
- delete everything in /var/cache/httpd
- start apache

Then it does work again for a couple of hours / days.

I discovered this work around, because I needed this in order to fix another
problem; updated some files but apache kept on going to serve the old versions.

As a work around I have changed the 403 errordocument:

ErrorDocument 403 /index.html

so the website visiters do not see this weird 403 problem (hopefully)

Are you using mod_cache? If yes please upgrade to the latest 2.2.x as  mod_cache
in 2.0.x is known to have several bugs.

Additional info to this mistery:

- we have 2 identical compaq servers
- both mandriva, both identical
- 1 server is doing xpunlimited.nl
- 1 server is doing xpunlimited.com

the .nl server never has this 403 problem. The .com server quite randomly

I have started a bashscript
- while do each 20 seconds
     wget http://www.xpunlimited.com -o xpu.txt

Test the result in xpu.txt, being 200 OK or anything else
==> randomly not 200 OK but 403.........

weird.

Do an strace on one of the child processes when this is happening.

The most likely explanation is that the filesystem is simply telling apache that
the file does not exist.

I can not aggree on this assumption
- the file exist
- the file exist using bash, ls command
- the file exist using SMB mounts
- the file always exist.

To reverse, why would apache think that the filesystem tells it that the file
does not exist, after several random hours or days.

if /var/www/html/xpunlimited/index.html does not exist according to apache, why
does a work around like deleting the content of /var/cache/https work.

I see no valid reason for the asumption that after a couple of hours the
filesystem tells apache that the file does not exist while other ways of asking
the file system about the file always result in the file index.html

This work around works; apache is able to server the /index.html

So, the filesystem is not telling apache that /index.html does not exist. The
filesystem is telling apache that /index.html does exist.
In case the filesystem was telling apache that /index.html does not exist (which
is not the case), then apache should, as usual, generate the typical apache
error page about the error and that there was no errorpage for the encountered
error.
The fact that apache is able to server /index.html in case of a 403 error proves
that it is a weird error; 403 because /index.html does not exist and therefore
apache services /index.html..........

The content seems to be, indeed a cache.
I think I could mount /var/cache on some fast medium like a ramdisk, and
increase the speed of apache. Right now, there is just 1 disk in the system with
ext3.

Some folders do have files. These files are copies of the html files in
/var/www/html. I discovered this, because, as stated before, apache kept on
serving old files despite the fact that files in /var/www/html were updated. I
discovered that this old content of old files was located in one of the sub
folders of /var/cache/httpd. Therefore I started the procedure
- stop apache
- delete all content of /var/cache/https
- start apache

This work around procedure is already a bit improved.
- delete all content of /var/cache/https
- restart graceful apache
I am thinking of scheduling this once 1 an hour.

It seems that apache accept the 'sudden' delete of all content in
/var/cache/httpd, without other problems.

Despite your denial you are using mod_cache. It may not be configured in
httpd.conf, but in one of the files included by httpd.conf, e.g.

# Bring in additional module-specific configurations
#
Include modules.d/*.conf

# include legacy conf.d during a transition period
Include conf.d/*.conf

So please refer to my comment here

If you intend to use mod_cache please upgrade to 2.2.x, otherwise turn it off.

Thx for your attention. You were indeed right; I overlooked the additional
includes. There it was; mod_disk_cache. Removed it and things are running smooth!
