Particulary 'position' and 'colname', and it's annoying when you want to fetch
resultsets with varying number or names of columns.

I've browsed the source via the webcvs interface but I don't see exactly where
this limitation is enforced and why.

I'm open to a short explanation and perhaps I could help to fix this.

The TLD file can be edited if you want to use expressions in any tag attribute.
