...although we should think twice before adding one: it's huge, and the validation might have a hefty performance impact on the whole server. as long as we can be reasonably sure it's only openoffice, we should be fine, but as soon as other vendors start implementing it, it's nitpicking time.

Koffice was the first to implement ODF and OpenOffice.org was second. Lotus Notes 8 will be using it (the beta does already). There is a viewer plug-in for FireFox, though currently limited to wordprocessing files. The browser has wide usage even if the plugin and the above office suites have not achieved the same level of market penetration. https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1888 There is also a working plug-in for MS Office XP, 2000, and 2003: http://www.sun.com/software/star/odf_plugin/ So, soon "nitpicking time" should be at least placed on the calendar. ;)
