If you put unicode letter and after that couple of "normal" letters, then HWPFDocument.getPicturesTable() is loosing all images. 
I attached sample file that's showing this bug

I can confirm that this document works fine for me in POI 3.5 FINAL.

The MD5 I get for the embedded image is: e1cb483ca9d8dcab0ff1894c22d81edf

Looks to be fixed now
