according to MS Excel online doc., dot or period is a valid character for range name.  However, XSFName.validate() does not permit dot - such as "my.range" - as a cell range name.  Please kindly fix it.

You are correct. Per the Excel Named Range docs [1]:

> Spaces are not allowed as part of a name. Use the underscore character (_) and period (.) as word separators, such as, Sales_Tax or First.Quarter.

I broke this in r1749305 when trying to restrict named ranges in bug 56781
