Make the SQL editing area a real editor not just a text area: show line numbers, bookmarks, right hand error stripe with the current line mark add error annotations (when we support them), add a typical popup menu with "Select in", Cut/Copy/Paste, and Undo (plus keyboard shortcuts) add a status bar with position and INS/OVR, etc. Simply make it an editor. I have not looked into details but SQL editor combines an editor with result set, css editor combines an editor pane with structured editor, so it should not be too hard to use the same approach in visual editor.
