NB6.7

Do a diff on some files. Find a place that deserves editing and try to go to full featured editor (I know I can do
in-place edits but I want full editor window and full functionality). How can I do that. No double-click, enter, context
menu, button, action in toobar. I am afraid I am missing something obvious.

I guess you expect some kind of Open action, which would open a file in a stand-alone editor (in a separate editor tab).
I am afraid no such action currently exists.
