Currently the html validation is done with respect to the w3c specifications. In the real word applications the standards are usually not followed precisely but some "best practices" are used instead. Especially in the pre html5 word the difference is quite significant.

It would be nice if the html validator service allows to validate such documents which renders well in the browsers but doesn't comply the spec precisely.
