Multiple reports of not being able to open a newly created maven project in 7.1 rc* due to it not being recognized by the ide.

The only work around I've found is to load the project in 7.0.1. Something happens and this fixes it and it can then be recognized in 7.1. I've seen this on Windows 7 and Max OSX 10.7.*
