Description drakemj 2007-12-18 14:00:18 UTC
The NetBeans 6.0 editor is painfully slow for me. It's so slow, in fact, that I have been copying sections of code to a
plain text editor to make changes and then pasting the changed code back to NetBeans. I would like to be able to modify
the editor options to disable some of the features such as autocomplete, in an attempt to improve the editing speed.
The Tools | Options menu option is not on my menu. I read about one other user with this issue, but I'm not sure if
there's a resolution. The Help documentation states that the editor settings should be under Tools | Options.

Hi, what do you mean that it's not available in your menu? There is no Tools menu in the main menu bar or there is no
Options menu item when you open the Tools menu or the options dialog does not show up when you click Tools-Options? Also
what version of IDE, JDK and OS are you using? Thanks
Comment 2 drakemj 2007-12-19 12:59:52 UTC
Sorry, I should have been more clear. I do have a Tools menu. Options is not available on the Tools menu.

NetBeans IDE: 6.0 (Build 200711261600)
OS: Mac OS X Version 10.4.11
JDK: 1.6 (1.6.0-b-88-17-release)

Just let me know if you need more info. Thanks
Comment 3 Jan Lahoda 2007-12-19 13:17:07 UTC
AFAIK, on Mac OS X, the Tools/Options menu item is moved somewhere else (NetBeans/Preferences, if I remember correctly).
Comment 4 drakemj 2007-12-19 14:35:45 UTC
Ok, I do see the editor options under NetBeans preferences. Consider updating the help documentation to reflect this.
Comment 5 Jiri Prox 2008-01-02 13:08:04 UTC
Yes, I can confirm it, Tools -> Options is the same as NetBeans -> Preferences on Mac
Comment 6 Kenneth Ganfield 2008-03-03 11:10:25 UTC
A solution for this could be to add the mac location to the main Options window topic.
Would this be sufficient?
Comment 7 Geertjan Wielenga 2008-03-03 11:33:44 UTC
Note that there is already a Mac-specific help topic in the helpset, which described among other things exactly this
situation. Should it be more prominent somewhere?
Comment 8 Patrick Keegan 2008-03-03 12:07:02 UTC
Not all Mac users are going to immediately think that the topic doesn't apply to them is because of Mac-specific
differences. Other reasons might seem more likely (e.g. the doc is outdated). We should consider putting something like
"(on Mac OS, NetBeans > Preferences)" after occurrences of "Tools > Options" in the Help. Ugly, but....
Comment 9 Kenneth Ganfield 2008-03-03 12:07:09 UTC
I think that it could be a little more prominent.
Links to the mac topic could be added to topics where it is particularly relevant, such as the options and configuring
the IDE topic(s)
Comment 10 Kenneth Ganfield 2008-03-03 15:22:28 UTC
though the chances that a topic in the help might be outdated are slim, I would say that the Mac OS steps be added to
only a couple of the most important topic locations, eg Configuring the IDE, the main Options window topic. certainly
not all instances where Options is mentioned. the link to the Options window topic is probably enough to help the user
locate the relevant steps. and links to mac os page from those main pages
Comment 11 Patrick Keegan 2008-03-28 15:09:49 UTC
References to Preferences has been added in some places, but I can't really call this fixed.
Comment 12 Irina Filippova 2009-04-17 08:29:13 UTC
The issue, which was filed against online help: to add that on Mac OS the Tools > Options menu is available as NetBeans
> Preferences, can be considered fixed.

References to NetBeans > Preferences on Mac have been added to several topics relevant to Tools > Options.
Closing the issue as fixed.
