(I doubt this thing looks good on any OS, but...)

Notice in the attached screen shot, the shadow for the updates available popup, compared with the Mac-like shadow around the floating window behind it.  It 
really looks a strange visitor from Windows 3.1.  

The code for drawing the other drop shadows is in core.swing.plaf - perhaps we could use that (or anything else, really) instead?
