"Automatic Projects" is an excellent plugin that allows to create a project based on an ant build file or a maven project file without creating any files or directories in the source directory. 
This plugin is not available for download in the plugin dialog, and there is no version available that is explicitly stated to work with 8.x.
This plugin should be in the list of plugins that is available from the plugins window by default because it provides something that is unique and not available in Eclipse or IntelliJ Idea.
