As Craig wrote --

During a discussion about some new AJAX components that are being written to
work with Thresher, an interesting question came up -- can a third party
component add itself to the list of components that the Table Layout customizer
offers as options for a column?  

If not, it would be nice to add an API for this as a post-Thresher feature.
