Currently, presentations have a fixed linear progression. I would like to be
able to make a slide that I can choose to call up, depending on the
circumstances, without necessarily including it in the main flow of the
presentation.

For example, I am teaching a class about energy conversion technlogies. I would
like to have (an) extra slide(s) explaining catalysis in case a student asks a
question about it. However, if no question comes (depending on the audience
which I don't exactly know in advance), I can just continue with the lecture.

I would like to be able to either bind extra slides to a button (keyboard or
widget), and/or have a tree structure in the slide sorter so that I can cluster
pieces of information and presentation.

There is already a presentation extension that can preview the next slide and
show notes, so it might be possible to extend this to show branch options as well.

If you want to call optional slides, you can create a graphic and bound an
action to it. You can do the same on the optional slide to get back to the main
track.
I don't see a need to implement this in another way.
If you want to extend the Presenter Console extension
(http://extensions.services.openoffice.org/en/project/presenter-screen), you
should add your ideas to the wiki page:
http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/Presenter_Screen
That is not an valid issue for the presentation modul of OOo.
