Hello,
   Installing the latest OpenOffice package
openoffice@3.1.0,5.11-0.111:20090518T062712Z there is no English dictionary
enabled and no warning to the user that spell checking is not performing a
thorough check. If a user performs a check they receive: "spell check is
complete," making one think that all the spelling is right.

Looking at the package the following files are delivered for dictionaries:
opt/openoffice.org/basis3.1/share/wordbook/en-US/soffice.dic
opt/openoffice.org/basis3.1/share/wordbook/en-US/sun.dic

This is a rather glaring problem for adoption since users may not notice this
and will end up thinking their document has no errors when it may.

A workaround is to install a user specific dictionary by going to:
http://extensions.services.openoffice.org/dictionary and opening any downloaded
dictionary with /bin/soffice and following the installation prompts.

Which build did you install ?
Comment 2 richburridge 2009-07-23 17:57:30 UTC
It's the version of OpenOffice 3.1 that is available
with OpenSolaris 2009.06.
Comment 3 eric.savary 2009-07-24 12:53:54 UTC
I'll track this on the OpenSolaris Bugzilla...
Comment 4 eric.savary 2009-07-27 23:08:34 UTC
Looking at your comments in the OpenSolaris Bugzilla it looks like package
problem (framework). I can tell if the issue is on our side or OpenSolaris...

@OF: Please have a look.

------- Comment #3 From Rich Burridge 2009-07-24 07:39:01 -------
I was thinking a bit about this yesterday as I was moving it over...

The OpenOffice packages on OpenSolaris are derived from the SVR4
packages. One of the things that the package manager doesn't do at
install time on OpenSolaris, is run any scripts (such as postinstall
scripts).

Now I was wondering whether there was such a postinstall script for
OpenOffice and whether it didn't anything to setup spell checking.
If there is, then you will need to work out what the equivalent
actions are in the OpenSolaris world.

Just a thought. It might be something else completely.

@ jl: Do you have details about this problem?
Comment 6 joachim.lingner 2009-07-28 08:45:00 UTC
Installation of the dictionaries on OpenSolaris fails because they need a post
install script being executed. See issue 158698 (Bugtracker, NOT bugster).
Therefore this would be a duplicate. On the other hand, on could argue that if
no dictionary is installed, then there should be a spell check menu entry. Then
this issue belongs to TL.

@OF: You decide.
Comment 7 thomas.lange 2009-07-28 08:58:11 UTC
Basically even if no dictionary extension is provided it might be possible to
spell check anyway. After all our extension dictionaries are hunspell specific!
If you can install a spellchecker that does not need them spell checking would
still be possible. An example for this would be the Duden-Korrektor extension
(it comes along with everything it needs!)

Also (at least in Writer) the same menu entry is also used for grammar checking.
And currently all grammar checkers are installed as extension and bring all
their required data along. For example Language-Tool. Even with no spell checker
installed the menu entry would still be useful if a grammar checker is installed!

According to our offline discussion and the inhouse issue I'm adjusting prio
target and owner.

@richburridge,

the issue should be fixed in CWS jl133 but i don't have the means to verify it thoroughly.
Can you possibly check it? Otherwise i would just rely on jl's fix.
Comment 12 joerg.skottke 2009-09-16 03:40:35 UTC
To me.
Comment 13 joerg.skottke 2009-09-16 08:42:29 UTC
Set verified.

Comment 15 mdxonefour 2009-10-09 08:17:02 UTC
MD: Reopening this issue because CWS jl133 is not yet integrated into 3.2 code
line by intention. So far we didn't receive any confirmation from OSOL team,
that the proposed fix is really sufficiant in point of view to IPS packaging and
the OSOL Repository. Currently JL is trying to get such feedback on OSOL mailing
lists.
Comment 16 mdxonefour 2009-10-09 08:18:11 UTC
MD: Setting back to fixed.
Comment 17 mdxonefour 2009-10-09 08:19:11 UTC
MD: Setting to Verified again. NOTE: This issue was verified by OOo
development/qa but we are still waiting for verification from OSOL.
Comment 18 joerg.skottke 2009-11-30 12:23:45 UTC
This issue is badly placed in my intray because i'm not likely to get any
feedback from the OSOL-guys.

To MD.
Comment 19 mdxonefour 2009-11-30 12:53:31 UTC
MD: The correpsonding CWS has already been integrated.
