If I find that if I number a paragraph "a" and then the next b" and the next
"c", the one after that is automatic, and is always "ci" - and indented, unlike
the first three.The one after that is "cii."  I have failed to see what causes
this or how to stop the automatic numbering from taking place.

c. is interpreted as roman numbering by autoformat feature.
