Description Unknown 2003-01-11 09:33:11 UTC
Excuse if this was sent inappropriately. I am a heavy user, converting a
business to the cause. If suggestions should be sent elsewhere drop me a quick
note to say where as you can expect a lot more as I am moving an entire office
to OO from MSOXP. naz@mira.net

In MS Word when you click in the margin of a page it changes the mouse cursor
to an arrow pointing from the bottom left to the top right (mirrored from the
default windows cursor) and allows you to select content of a document line by
line. I use this alot and find that clicking and dragging across a whole line
is harder when you want to select a whole paragraph or if you specifically want
a line from a bulleted list.

changing component/QA contact to Writer
changing ownership to user experience for evaluation

It seems to be the same as issue 13587.

FI:
2 clicks in the margin select the first word.
3 clicks in the margin select the whole paragraph.

I, like the original poster, would like to have the option to line-select as I
do with MS Word. Not *instead* of the multiple clicks one can use in Writer, but
"in addition to".

There is one annoyance I've found when trying to select lots of text with the
mouse. Lets see if I can describe this clearly.

I've found that, sometimes, selecting multiple lines by "click and drag," and
it's so much text that I force Writer to scroll down the page, there is a
"rubber-band" effect. That is, Writer will spring the selection back to the
previous screen where I started selecting, and keeps "rubberbanding" the
selection no matter how many times I try.

Using shift-arrow down/page down works without problem though.

I was going to say "always" instead of "sometimes," since this is one of the
things that force me to go back to Word. However, I decided to make one last
"reality check" before posting, and Writer "made me look bad" by allowing me to
do screen-scroling click-drag-selects without rubberbanding *sigh*... so I don't
know if this is an easily reproducible issue, or if its something that only
happens to me. I wanted to give a heads-up about this just in case anyway.

This issue would be important for me as well. As an ancient OOo user (since the
years of StarOffice), I like a lot of features of OOo but there are some still
missing. One of them is the topic of this issue: the selcting on the margin
similarly to MSWord.

I have to write a course book for economist students about office tools. Last
year I wrote it about MSOffice because in Hungary (where I live) this is much
more common tool compared to OOo. Now I have the agreement with the leaders of
the university to emphasize in the next year that there is an other solution,
OOo, which is equivalent to MSO (or is better) and is free.

I am sad to say but in some cases I have to wite into the cousre book: "sorry,
it does not work in OOo". This is the click/double click/triple click on the
left margin which selects the line/paragraph/document. This would be a very
nice-to-have feature in OOo too, so I give my vote to this issue.

Regards,

Csongor Halmai

Bettina,
could you, please, if possible, assign this enhancement to appropriate
developer?
Thanks a lot for your consideration.

Mathias,
sorry to be pushy here, but could you, please, at least, take this RFE out of
dark corner so that some developer could pick it for implementation?

I don't know what you are expecting. We don't have a developer ATM to work on
that - for everybody else this issue is at least visible by its votes. Changing
the owner to e.g. me wouldn't change anything. Or what else is it you are asking
for?

The issue #12489 looks like a similar/duplicate one to me.

I voted for this issue and am hoping that it will be implemented soon. I used to
use this MS Word feature so often that I am still expecting it unconsciously in
Writer, even after using Writer for a year now.

To grep the issues easier via "requirements" I put the issues currently lying on
my owner to the owner "requirements".
Comment 18 Dmitry Pashkevich 2010-05-28 11:31:06 UTC
So many years have past since first request and the feature isn't still
implemented though I see it simple to implement and super useful. Voted.
Comment 19 halmai 2010-05-28 21:05:06 UTC
I am really disappointed that more than seven (7!) years was not enough for this
issue to go a bit forward.

I vote for this but I do not hope it helps. Dozens of votes are still in from
the users. What else can I do personally in order to suggest developers to work
on this issue?

It seems this is not a too difficult job although maybe I am wrong because I am
an outsider. Sorry if this is the case.
