I am new to OpenOffice. When I downloaded to my Windows Vista machine and told 
it to make a desktop icon from the installation wizard, it the desktop icon 
does not start up OpenOffice. Instead it opens up a window. It works fine being 
installed on my old Windows XP Dell computer,

Please tell us, which version of OOo do you use. The version 1.0.0 is very old.

Then provide a screenshot of the situation. You can upload it by "create a new
attachment". Can you describe the steps you make during the installation process?
