Description oo_user57 2010-03-22 12:41:54 UTC
Exported PDF of specific impress (odp) file doesn't show bullets in text area.
The bullets in the text are are not displayed in the PDF export, while the same
type of bullets are displayed in the balloon. This applies to the slide version
and the notes version.

Please attach one of your pdfs, too. I cannot reproduce the problem here. Which
viewer do you use?

I'm using Acrobat Reader 9.3.1 and ghostview 4.9 displays the same output, so
I'm quite sure that is not a problem of the PDF viewer.
The same problem occurs on OpenOffice3.2 for Mac where I'm using the standard
PDF viewer.
It's the green & yellow square bullets that are missing in the text field of the
PDF, but similar green bullets appear in the balloon.

(J Johansson, 2010-03-27)

Summary:
========
Using DEV300m75 and OOo320m12 on WinXP, the missing bullets display by changing
output format to PDF/A. This works with and without slide notes.

The Customize tab on Numbering/Bullets style for the disappearing bullets
behaves oddly on Notes-PDF-gen.odp file (both versions: trackers 110305 and
110396). I was not able to reproduce on other files. I wonder if file contents
could be corrupted.

I hope this helps locating the issue.

Builds used:
============
OOo-dev 3.3.0 DEV300m75 (Build:9488)
OOo 3.2.0 OOo320m12
OOo 3.1.1 OOo310m19

Platform/OS:
==========
PC/Windows XP Professional SP2
Adobe Acrobat Reader 8.1.2

Export as PDF setting:
======================
In 3.3.0 DEV300m75, I turned PDF export options On and Off one at a time
to see if they affect the bullet points in PDF.
This displayed them correctly:

1. File >> Export as PDF ... >> General >> [section General].
2. By default, "Create PDF form" is checked after installing OOo. Uncheck this.
(= this disables printable fill-in PDF forms if you have any)
3. Check "PDF/A-1a"
4. Export Notes-PDF-gen.odp from 110305 sa PDF, with or without Notes
    RESULT:
Resulting PDF file will be 15-20 KB larger,
but all bullet points should now be displayed.
5. Same works for Notes-PDF-gen.odp in 110396, but first delete
the fish image on first slide. It is apparently transparent and
cannot be correctly converted to PDF/A format.

In 3.1.1 bullet points displayed regardless of PDF ouput format.
oo_user57 did not have problems using that version either (see 110396).

Bullets/Numbering Style
=======================
I observed this in 3.1.1, 3.2.0, and 3.3.0 DEV300m75:

1. Open Notes-PDF-gen.odp from 110305 or 110396
2. Choose a line in text with disappearing bullets
3. Edit Numbering/Bullet >> Customize (Format)
    RESULT:
The bullets graphical preview shows same colors as
    in the actual presentation.
4. Select level 1-10 and observe editable Color and Size controls
    RESULT:
Level has no color nor relative size
5. Click through levels 2-8 and observe Color
    RESULT:
Levels 2-8 appear to have NO color set!
6. Click levels 1, 9, 10 and observe Color
    RESULT:
    Levels 9-10: "Automatic"
    Level 1: Light Green
7. Click levels 2-8 again
    RESULT:
Whatever was the last color selected on level 1, 9, or 10,
appears as the color for levels 2-8. This seems odd.
8. Choose a line from the the balloon where bullets don't disappear
9. Edit Numbering/Bullet >> Customize. Click through the levels.
    RESULT:
All levels have Light Green and match the graphical preview 100%.
10. In 110396 attachment, slide 1, last two yellow bullets appear in PDF.
Use Format Painbrush to copy their format to the first two bullets,
which don't display in PDF when using 3.3.2 or 3.3.0 DEV300m75.
11. Export to PDF
    RESULT:
Now all four yellow bullets should display in PDF.

I created new presentations from scratch and manually Customized bullet colors.
I couldn't reproduce disappearing bullets nor "no color selected" anomaly in
Customize tab. Seems there is something special about Notes-PDF-gen.odp. Yet in
3.1.1 PDF export is fine. Is the file based on a template which was created in
3.2.0?
3.1.1?
Comment 7 oo_user57 2010-03-29 10:28:57 UTC
This workaround helps. And you are right, newly created slides don't show these
problems. Thanks so far. But it is quite some work to apply these steps on
hundred of slides. The file is not created based on an official OpenOffice
template, but it has been imported from a Powerpoint presentation by Openoffice
version 2.x. I don't know if there is something corrupted in this file, but all
of my old presentations are affected, because they use the same template. And,
as I said, the problem didn't show up in the versions up to 3.1. I would
appreciate if there could be a solution that automatically converts my
presentations into a valid Openoffice presentation.
Comment 8 oo_user57 2010-03-29 14:38:04 UTC
It would also help if there was a way to apply the existing slides to an adapted
master. I've adapted the master so that new slides are now generated with the
new bullet definition and they get displayed in the PDF, but this has no effect
on existing slides.
Comment 9 wolframgarten 2010-04-08 09:51:33 UTC
@oo_user57: does it help for you to check "PDF/A-1a" in the export options?
In my opinion it is possible to assign a corrected master page to the already
existing pages...
Comment 10 oo_user57 2010-04-08 12:55:45 UTC
On the one hand, it helps to check "PDF/A-1a" in the export options, as the
buttons are displayed correctly, on the other hand the slides with transparent
diagrams are turned to black and the PDF files become huge, i.e. more than 10
times the size of the normal PDFs. Therefore I can't really use it.
You are right, it is possible to assign a corrected master page to the already
existing pages, but this has no influence on the used bullets of the old slides,
only on the bullets of new slides - at least in my installation. You can easily
check this on the example presentation.

I downloaded the provided .odp file and opened it with
OOo-Dev_3.3.0beta1_Win_x86_install_en-US.

I then exported it to .pdf. My .pdf version is 9.3.3.177

I observed that the Green bullets in the text box that are square in the .odp
are circular in the .pdf. The same type of bullets in the "voice" bubble did
not change between file formats.

I tried creating a different .odp with square bullets and exporting it to .pdf.
The problem did not show up.
Comment 12 oo_user57 2010-09-23 13:23:27 UTC
That's right - if I create a new .odp with square bullets then the problem
doesn't show up. But that's not the issue. I've got thousands of slides that
worked with old versions of open office and I just don't want to manually
rewrite them with the new bullets.
In my opinion the opd and the pdf representation of the slides should look
similar, therefore I assume there is a bug somewhere in the transformation.

During the time that the OpenOffice site was being upgraded, I tried to create templates from scratch as well as to find older templates created with older versions of OpenOffice and to convert PowerPoint templates with bullets to OpenOffice in an attempt to recreate this issue. The only way I was successful in recreating it was to download the actual example template that was posted by the original submitter (oo_user57).

Subsequently, since the site has become available again, I have downloaded an update posted, and since that update, I can no longer recreate this issue. I would suggest downloading OOo-dev 3.4.0 (dev300m101 (Build:9573) and see if you are still able to see the issue with the bullet points not showing up in the PDF file.

I am able to replicate the bug with that specific odp which is mentioned in comment 1.

I am using OpenOffice 3.4.0 Build 9590 Rev 1325589

System Information:
OS: Windows Vista Home Premium
Laptop: Dell Inspiron 1525
Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo CPU T7250 @ 2.00 GHz
System Type: 32-bit Operating System

I actually conducted couple of tests. In Tests 1 & 2, I am not able to replicate the bug as these are done on new slides. I am able to replicate the bug in Test 3 which uses existing slide.

Below are the complete details.

Test 1:
Steps:
1. Create a Empty presentation without background.
2. Write text (10-12 lines).
3. Select each line one by one-> select option “Numbering/Bullets”-> Add bullets (different bullets for each line) -> Customized bullets-> Select Different Size & different color for each bullet.

4. Add a callout-> Write Text -> Apply bullets-> Customized bullets-> Select Different Size & different color for each bullet.

5. Add a new slide-> Add a table-> Write Text -> Apply bullets-> Customized bullets-> Select Different Size & different color for each bullet.
[Do not save the .odp file]

6. Menu-> Click on File-> Export as PDF
7. PDF Options-> General Tab-> Create PDF form (it is checked by default)-> Click on Export.

Result: opd is exported successfully and all bullets are displayed as expected.

8 [Continue from above steps] Menu-> Click on File-> Export as PDF
9. PDF Options-> General Tab-> Check “PDF/A-1a” -> Click on Export.

Result: opd is exported successfully and all bullets are displayed as expected.

8 [Continue from above steps] Menu-> Click on File-> Export as PDF
9. PDF Options-> General Tab-> Check “Tagged PDF” -> Click on Export.

Result: opd is exported successfully and all bullets are displayed as expected.

Test 2:
Run above test on a new presentation by selecting a predefined template.
Result: opd is exported successfully and all bullets are displayed as expected.

Test 3:
1. Download the ODP mentioned in step 1.
2. Insert a New slide and repeat steps mentioned in test 1.

Result:
1. When export with option PDF/A-1a, both slides are exported successfully and all bullets are displayed as expected.
2. When export with option Tagged pdf-> For newly added slide, all bullets are correctly displayed. But for the existing slide, instead of bullets, Arrows are displayed.
3. When export with option Create PDF form > For newly added slide, all bullets are correctly displayed. But for the existing slide, instead of bullets, Arrows are displayed.

It seems that issue still persists for existing slides. But for newly added slides, it works fine.

I tried by changing the various PDF options like "Initial View" & User Interface" and got the same results.
I tried by downloading some old .odp files from google which contain bullets, Exprt to PDF worked fine for that odp as well.

Also, if you copied the slide from Notes-PDF-gen.odp (which is in comment 1), and paste the slide to a new impress file, then the bullets are not exported correctly. See Below attachments

Color and size dropdowns are blank

In this attachment, you will see that for existing copied slide, Color and size dropdowns are blank but for new side, it works fine at all levels.
Comment 19 sumitkalra 2012-06-17 16:54:09 UTC
I agree that there is a workaround for old slides and this bug is not replicable for new slides.

But I think this bug should be analyzed by the development and figure out that why the old slide is behaving like this? Is the old slide corrupted? OR ARE we missing any steps to replicate the bug on new slides?

I am assuming what if this issue encounter by few lay-mans and they have 100s of corrupted slides.

Comment 21 Artiom 2015-04-10 14:43:27 UTC
Successfully reproduced the issue with old uploaded presentation file (https://bz.apache.org/ooo/attachment.cgi?id=68474)

Version: AOO411m6(Build:9775) - Rev. 1617669
OS: Mac OS X 10.9.5

Reproductions steps:
- Open the attached presentation (Notes-PDF-gen.odp)
- Export to PDF file
- See, that bullets aren't displayed

I couldn't reproduce the same problem in newly created document.

In reply to comment #14:
If I add new slide to uploaded presentation, this slide doesn't have any bullets too. The behaviour is the same as in the original slide.

As far as this problem isn't reproducible in newly created files, I think it won't affect big amount of users and can be closed.
