the problem is very similar to the bug in gnumeric:

they have solution there.

Steps to reproduce:
1. merge A1:A2, A3:A4
2. set A1 = 1, A3 = 2
3. select A1:A4 and autofill to A8

Expected behavior:
4. A5:A6 and A7:A8 become merged and A5 = 3, A7 = 4

Actual behavior:
4. A5 = 2 and A7 = 3, but A5:A6 and A7:A8 do NOT become merged.
