Text with image to reproduce endless scroll bug none

Description dahti00 2011-08-10 20:32:30 UTC
The scrolling of pages hangs when you try dragging an image over several pages.

------Good-------
Happens less often when using a separate usb mouse.
------Bad--------
Happens all the time on a mousepad.

------Description-----
When dragging an image across pages the scrolling hangs and just flies through all the pages of the document. You must reach the quickest page scrolling speed for this to happen. This happens easier on a mouse-pad because they have edge acceleration. To reach maximum scrolling speed you have to drag the image to the very top or bottom of the OO window.

This is a serious hang of the system since it can't be aborted. Imagine having hundreds of pages. -Hi guys coffee brake, see you in 5minutes!
I don't see an easy fix as using Ctrl X and Ctrl V since this does not let you place the image in a precise manner at the new location. Who does not drag n Drop these days!?

-------Steps to Reproduce-----
*Click an image drag it to top most or bottom most screen so the pages accelerate the fastest.
*Let go off mouse button - congrats or scrolling hands free Yeah awesome... NOT.

------Video-----
See this Youtube clip i uploaded:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JkRnB-7eFQE

----Actual Results-----
Scrolling hangs and you can't abort it until scrolling has reached either the start or finish of the document. Tried Esc, clicking mouse and everything.

----Expected Results----
Scroll should stop as soon as the mouse button is released, or deaccelerate pretty fast within 1 page.

getting rid of value "enhancement" for field "severity".
For enhancement the field "issue type" shall be used.

I'm adding this comment to all open issues with Issue Type == PATCH. We have 220 such issues, many of them quite old. I apologize for that.

We need your help in prioritizing which patches should be integrated into our next release, Apache OpenOffice 4.0.

If you have submitted a patch and think it is applicable for AOO 4.0, please respond with a comment to let us know.

On the other hand, if the patch is no longer relevant, please let us know that as well.

If you have any general questions or want to discuss this further, please send a note to our dev mailing list: dev@openoffice.apache.org

Thanks!

I am unable to reproduce this bug
I'm using OpenOffice ver 3.3 on Windows 7
Cannot see that this bug is related to other reported bugs

A couple of questions for clarity.

When you say the scrolling of pages hangs when you try dragging an image over several pages, are you referring to the page continuing to scroll when you release the image prior to reaching the top or bottom of the document?

How many pages are you attempting to scroll through?
Why is cut and paste not a good option for tranferring the image over a large number of pages?

My steps taken to reproduce:

1. Copied an image into OpenOffice document
2. Created 10 pages and numbered Page 1, Page 2, etc.
3. Clicked image using mouse and dragged mouse backward to scroll down the page.
4. clicked image using mouse and dragged mouse forward to scroll up the page.
5. Released the image at multiple locations on a single page.
6. Released the image on mulitple pages.
7. Repeated steps 1 - 6 using the mouse pad on laptop.

This bug would be an issue as saving time is always an important factor. Delays, stalling and hang-ups waste time.
If attempting to copy an image over more than a few pages, I would use CTRL X & CTRL V. You can place the image in a precise manner by placing your curser in the exact position of where you want the image to reside on the new page.
You may have to drag the image left, right, up or down, but this would be easier than attempting to drag an image over a large number of pages.

Also wanted to add that I reviewed the attachment at YouTube, saw the image and screen moving, however can't determine what is transpiring with the mouse at the time the screen and image are in motion.

Is there a scroll lock feature on your pc that may need to be adjusted?

Text with image to reproduce endless scroll bug

Here is a file that reproduces this bug somewhat reliably (for me, at least). My system: Win 8, OpenOffice 4.0.0, no mouse, touchpad, Lenovo Thinkpad. When I say mouse button, I mean the left key of the touchpad that does what the left (primary) mouse button would do. By "dragging", I mean to highlight the image, keep the mouse button pressed, use another finger to stroke the touchpad so that the mouse pointer moves and drags the image with it.

- Open the file
- Scroll down until you see the image
- Try to drag the image down a bit, on the top of the following page.

The endless scroll effect comes pretty reliably when I release the mouse button on top the Writer status bar where the image location (in pixels) is shown when the image is selected. Moving the mouse cursor over the text of the next page doesn't do anything, I can't even place the image there. Writer needs to scroll a bit before that can be done.

The endless scroll does not happen always (it seems to depend on where you release the mouse button), and it is not always endless - sometimes it stops just a few pages down.

Note, however, a second bug after the endless scroll has happened: Hitting CTRL+Z (which is intuitively done to bring the image back to where it roughly belongs) will bring you to the bottom of the last page of the document. The image is moved back up, but Writer shows you the end of file. As, however, the image is still highlighted, you can use the arrow keys to move it, and this will bring the focus back to the image (although the arrow key has shifted it).

I am able to replicate error two times using the attachment from comment 5 when I drag the image provided downward and to the right as fast as I could. It does take a few tries and it seems that you have to drag the image very fast.

Operating System: Win 8 Professional 64

Device: MacBook Pro Mid 2011 i7, 6GB RAM

OpenOffice: 4.0.1

No hanging but image location is not according to last mouse position, i.e. image seems to be moving from source to destination but it actually stays in place.
