Hello,

When New Zealand English is selected, the spell checker flags flavour, colour and metre, for example, as incorrectly spelt. However, centre or theatre, for example, are not.

In New Zealand we spell it "centre" and "theatre", rather than the American "center" or "theater", so that is correct, but "flavour", "colour", "harbour", "neighbour" etc. are all spelt with a "U".

If I source an official guide to New Zealand English spelling, can we have the irregularities in the spell checker amended?

Regards,

Jeremy Randerson

getting rid of value "enhancement" for field "severity".
For enhancement the field "issue type" shall be used.

Hi,

I am running OS X Yosemite version 10.10.5. I confirmed that, in OpenOffice 4.1.2 (AOO412m3(Build:9782) - Rev. 1709696), this is indeed the case.

To replicate,

-click on the OpenOffice button in the Mac toolbar at the very top and select "Preferences"

-select the arrow next to "Language Settings" in the menu on the left

-change "Locale Setting" to "English (New Zealand)"

-under "Default language for documents" change "Western" to "English (New Zealand)"

    -select "Ok"

I have included a screenshot of the adjusted changes.

Now, after typing all of the aforementioned words in the document, centre and theatre are unmarked, while flavour, colour, and metre are marked as incorrectly spelled. I have attached a screenshot of these misspellings as well as the document in which these errors occur.

When I repeat the same steps in a Microsoft Word document, it allows me to change the default language only to Australian English--not New Zealand English. In this document, flavour, colour, metre, centre, and theatre are all marked as spelled correctly, while the English spellings are actually marked as misspelled. I have attached both a screenshot and the Word document of these errors. Upon further inspection, the OpenOffice Australian dictionary also yields these results.

The problem is that Microsoft Word offers an Australian English dictionary, but not a New Zealand dictionary for the Mac OS. Because of this, I cannot provide firsthand proof that Microsoft Word processes these words differently than OpenOffice. I have looked into this problem through multiple Google searches, where I found others discussing Microsoft Word on Windows processing New Zealand English words like colour and honour correctly when the New Zealand English dictionary is selected (http://superuser.com/questions/486139/microsoft-word-strict-inforcement-of-new-zealand-british-english?rq=1).

Because Microsoft Word on Windows marks "colour," "flavour," and "metre" as correctly spelled in their New Zealand dictionary, OpenOffice should follow suit. The sentiment from users in forums online is that these words are used often and should be marked as incorrectly spelled in OpenOffice, as well. From the OpenOffice Forum, https://forum.openoffice.org/en/forum/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=80995, "In word if I type Color it should come up as wrong spelling NZ is Colour." There are no other reports in the OpenOffice database relevant to this dictionary issue, but there are many users raising the issue in forums online.
