While examining the file submitted as bug#117872, I discovered that Shadowed text created in Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2007 is not being rendered with the Shadow effect on in Impress (build m106).  (For comparison, text shadowed in Word does appear shadowed in Writer.)

To replicate:
1. Use Microsoft PowerPoint to create a document containing shadowed text.
2. Save as a pptx file.
3. Open that file in Impress.
4. Observe that the text intended to be shadowed is instead rendered as plain text.

I noticed that PowerPoint makes buttons available to easily set text to bold, italic, underline, strikethrough, or shadowed.  I created a slide with a line of text in each of these text effects, saved it as a pptx file, and opened it in Impress.  Only the shadowed text displayed differently in Impress.  I've attached that sample file.

Interestingly, the problem doesn't appear if the document is originally created in PowerPoint, saved as a ppt file, opened and altered in PowerPoint 2007, saved there, and reopened under Impress.  Under those conditions, the shadow text effects applied in Impress or added while in PowerPoint are all present when the file is reopened under Impress.

Possibly related bugs: bug#105606 (closed in 2009) and bug#104085(last updated in 2010).

I was able to reproduce this using Windows XP with versions OOO330m20 and DEV300m106 of Impress.

While reproducing this, I noticed that other text effects that are applied to shadowed text are retained even though the shadow effect is not. My attachment is a .pptx file created in PowerPoint 2007 similar to the attachment in the original report, but shows that bold, italic, underline, and strikethrough effects are retained on the same text that does not retain shadowing when the file is opened with Impress. I am not sure how important this is.

I was able to replicate this bug using the same steps:
1. Create a .pptx file in Powerpoint 2007 that contains "shadowed" text by using the shadow toolbar button. Save the file.
2. Open the .ppt file in Impress and notice that the originally shadowed text is NOT shadowed.
My system specs:
Windows 7 Ultimate x64
OpenOffice.org 3.2.1 and OpenOffice.org 3.4 beta1 OOO330m20
Microsoft Powerpoint 2007
4 GB RAM
Intel Q6700 @ 3.4GHz
I can also confirm that the work-around proposed by the original poster does work. I suspect that the main reason it works could be because when saving a presentation in Impress as a Powerpoint presentation, it is convert to .ppt, not the default .pptx for most Powerpoint 2007 files. This could be why the shadowing is displayed properly. I can speculate that .pptx files are not as compatible with Impress as .ppt files.  I did a follow-up test to show this:
1. Create file in Powerpoint
2. Insert shadowed text.
3. Save file as .ppt, not .pptx.
4. Open .ppt file in Impress. Notice the shadowing is correct.
This confirms that the actual bug lies within the .pptx format and its lack of compatibility.  Overall, the bug is one of the many low priority compatibility issues in Impress; Although, the impact is severe because Powerpoint 2007 and above all save files as .pptx as default.  This obviously causes problems in Impress.
I also went and tested a the .pptx file containing shadowed text in Google Docs. The same issue as Impress.  This has me starting to believe that it may be an issue with the .pptx format being more exclusive to Powerpoint.
