Description kazei 2012-03-17 20:53:51 UTC
A new usability feature in Impress implemented in OOo 3.3.0 allows in an only step to add a new slide and select a layout via “slide button” in the “Standard Toolbar”.

When adding a new slide via the “slide button” in the “Standard Toolbar” the flashing Caret is displayed no more. Inserting text is possible. But editing is very annoying without displayed Caret. Minimizing and maximizing the impress window will make the Caret appear. And when adding a new slide, the Caret is invisible again. This bug is easy reproducible.

This bug occurs in OOo 3.3.0 as well as in LibO 3.3.0 … 3.5.1 under all Windows versions – may be under Linux and Mac too. Tested on Windows XP SP3 and Windows 7 SP 1 – OOo 3.3.0 (German localization).
Compare too: https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=43340

The other ways to add a slide via menu (Insert) or context menu work normally – but without preselection of the layout.

Steps to reproduce the bug:
(1) Open a new Impress presentation with layout “Title slide”.
(2) Click into heading text box and insert text. As expected caret is flashing.
(3) Click/expand the “slide button” in the “Standard Toolbar” – Selector appears.
(4) Select “Title, content”.
(5) Click into heading text box “Click to add a title”.
Expected: Caret is flashing – Actual: No Caret!

Currently I don't know why the caret should flash. When inserting a new slide then the focus is going to the new slide. The just inserted text will remain and the view is switched to the new slide, so that you can start whatever you want to do with the new one.

I think it is generally usual that the Caret (i.e. the cursor position) should be displayed in order to see where text can be inserted or deleted or corrected. You can see such a usual behaviour in the above mentioned step (2). The problem in step (5) is not that you can not add any text or that text doesn’t remain. The problem is that you don’t see where the cursor position is! Editing without flashing Caret would be unacceptable in Writer or Calc and so on. A not visible cursor position makes every user unsure.

OK, now I got it. Yes, inserting is possible even without a flashing caret. But IMHO it's due to a slightly changed edit mode.

You don't even need a new slide to see this:

1. Create a new presentation with layout "Title slide".
2. You can see the "Click to add title" predefined text.
3. Click on this and write some text.
4. End the input with the [Esc] key.
5. The title box has now green handles and no caret.

From here you can continue to insert a title text without a visible and flashing caret.

IMHO this behavior is set since many releases and years. However, I never have thought about if this is good or not.

Can't confirm, if I do right.
After step 5:
Selecting a position with the mouse, caret appears.
Hitting a (letter)-key, the letter is inserted at the end of the written text. Caret is shown.

I've tested with OOo 3.3.0 (330m20 Build 9567) and AOO 3.4 Rev 130 3653
both engl. with German lang. pack
on Windows XP SP3 and Windows 7 SP 1 and default options.

I can not confirm the bug.

Caret is always flashing when i click at the Dummy-Text in the text box.

Caret is not visible only when the frame of the textbox is marked.

Have you any extensions installed?

In order to reproduce the bug you should click/expand (i.e. 'long click') the "Slide Button" - the layout selector appears - *select directly a predefined layout* - click now into the title box or text box to insert text (the frame is gray marked without green handles) - there is no Caret. This problem seems to be caused by selecting a predefined layout.

When you only click the "Slide Button" without selecting a predefined layout the Caret is visible and flashing as expected.

Tested with a server installation and default options, too.

Sorry, my fault. I use "Insert-Toolbar" (View > Toolbar) instead of "Standard-Toolbar".

Now i try it with Slide-Button in Standard-Toolbar and can confirm it for OOo 3.3
but it works in AOO 3.4
