.ppt file that doesn't display two annimations correctly in 3.4 -- see above description of problem none

Description Bill Rohde 2012-05-16 23:55:01 UTC
An Impress document created with 3.3 and saved as a .ppt does not correctly display some animations under 3.4. This is just one more of many cases of Impress incompatibilty with .ppt, however in this case there is a larger problem because it worked wtih Impress 3.3, so clearly an incompatibility was introduced with the 3.4 release.

Attached is the .ppt which shows the problem. In slide mode display and click through the annimations for slides 15 and 23 using both 3.3 and 3.4 and you'll see the compatibility problem with 3.4.

Incidentally, 3.3 also had many compatibility issues with .ppt. When I created a presentation file for use with Impress, .ppt with Windows, and .ppt with Mac, I spent days testing and "dumbing down" my presentation animations so that the presentation would work on all platforms with both Impress and .PPT. It appears that this area of OO has been very poorly tested.

@Bill: The attachment got lost somewhere, can you add it again? Thanks.

I already tried to send the attachment twice. I think it's too large (just under 15 Meg) for your bugzilla input system to handle. Can you give me an email address to send it to? I promise to delete and forget that email address after using it.

Currently maxattachment size is 1000 kB

Can you create a new document with only slides 15 to 23? Does this shorten the file size?

Created attachment 77590 [details]
.ppt file that doesn't display two annimations correctly in 3.4 -- see above description of problem

Per your request I've included only the two offending slides. When I removed all other slides, the slide deck was still 8Meg. I then removed the backlground theme bitmap and that shortened things up. The problem still occurs. View the two slides with 3.3 and then with 3.4 and you'll see the difference/problem.

btw - this is just one of many many problems in Impress handling of .ppt annimations, however this one is particularly serious as your own 3.4 isn't even compatible with 3.3. It took me days to get this presentation to work compatibility across .ppt on Windows platforms and Macs and with Impress (I had to iteratively "dumb down" the animations on numerous slides until things finally did work), and now with 3.4 it no longer works correctly with Impress.

I hope the new attachment is helpful to you in narrowing down and fixing the compatibility problem in 3.4. I also hope you can dedicate some resources to more thoroughly testing .ppt animation compatibility with Impress - it needs LOTS of work.

reproduced in Aoo 3.4 r1327774 on Windows 7 64-bit

It looks like a bug of the text animations. Instead of showing the text paragraph by paragraph the second half of the whole text is shown from the beginning. (on the first slide)

I have seen something similar recently where bullets where involved. Have to look that up.
