Description rickcast19 2012-10-05 23:49:22 UTC
I created an Impress presentation with a music file. When saved as a Powerpoint, the music does not play. When exported as a Flash file, the music does not play either. I'm also not sure if the slides change automatically also. So basically, the compatibility of Impress IS FUCKING USELESS!!!

(Scott Griffiths - 2012-10-26 ) - Additional Information - Steps to Reproduce.
Tested on the following:
(windows 7 x64 | Impress version 3.4.1 build: 9593

Test 1 - Test to see if a music file will work when opened by powerpoint

1. Opened Impress
2. Created a new presentation (using defaults)
3. Insert from the tool bar Choose "Slide"
4. Select "insert" from the menu then "Movie and Sound"
5. Select a .mp3 and 'open'
6. Add a title to the presentation
7. Select File and 'save as'
8. save as 'tester2.ppt'
** ODF popup warning shown, select "keep current Format"
9. close aOO
10. Open the 'tester2.ppt' with MS .ppt viewer

Result:
Music does not play

Expected: it to start playing on the first slide

Test 2 - Test to see if a music file embedded in a .swf will work when opened by a .swf viewer

1. Opened Impress
2. Created a new presentation (using defaults)
3. Insert from the tool bar Choose "Slide"
4. Select "insert" from the menu then "Movie and Sound"
5. select a .mp3 and 'open'
6. Add a title to the presentation
7. Select File and 'Export'
8. save as 'tester2.swf'
9 ** ODF popup warning shown, select "keep current Format"
10. close aOO
11. Open the tester2.swf with SWF viewer

Result: the music file does not play

Expected: the music would play apon opening the tester2.swf file

-- Under both situations the music files did not play, attempted to use a .wav file but the type was not supported

Open Office 3.4.1 AOO341m1 (Build:9596) - Rev. 1435053
+
Open Office 4.0.0 Beta Version AOO400m1 (Build:9700) - Rev. 1444151
Microsoft PowerPoint 2007

Steps to reproduce (For both 3.4.1 and 4.0.0):
1. Opened Impress
2. Created a new presentation (using defaults)
3. Add a title to the presentation
4. Select "insert" from the menu then "Movie and Sound"
5. Select a .mp3 and 'open'
6. Select File and 'save as'
7. Save as 'music1.ppt'
** ODF popup warning shown, select "keep current Format"
8. Close aOO
9. Open the 'tester2.ppt' with MS PowerPoint viewer

Result: No music is playing.
Expected result: Music playing.

This bug is still able to reproduce with the steps I used above. Scottys' comment with his steps are also still up to date!

A work around for people that only has MS PowerPoint is to download Open Office. The file is able to be played, with music from Open Office. If you're not able to download Open Office, I haven't found a work around yet.

As noticed I also tested this in the 4.0.0 Beta Version and the bug is able to reproduce there.

I'll attach a music file made from Open Office 4.0.0 and saved as Music.ppt

ISSUE 1: PPT format: MP3 file does not play in PPT.

Repro for me in Open Office 3.4.1 (Windows 8.1), as per Scott Griffiths (SG)'s and Johanna Forsberg (JF)'s repro steps above
Repro for me in Open Office 4.1.0 (Windows 8.1), as per SG's repro steps, but NOT as per JF's repro steps.

Regarding the difference between SG and JF's repro steps:

Results after SG's step 5 (in both versions of Open Office above):
-Media object seems to replace the "Outline Text" object (the box with "Click to add text").
-There are two objects after insert: title and media object.

When I continue SG's steps and save the ppt file, the path to the media object does not seem to get saved to the ppt file (hex editor does not show the path to the mp3 file, which happens when the object IS saved).
I am attaching SGStep5Result.zip created in 4.1.0 containing an odp and the corresponding ppt obtained using SG's steps

Results after JF's step 5 (in both versions of Open Office above:
-Media object is inserted on top of the "Outline Text" object.
-There are three objects afterwards: title, outline and media objects.

In 4.1.0, when I continue JF's steps and save the ppt file, the path to the media object is saved to the ppt file (Frhed hex editor shows the path to the mp3 file, search for "m<bh:00>p<bh:00>3")

Note that the ** ODF popup warning referenced in both SG and JF's repro steps contains the text: "This document may contain formatting or content that cannot be saved in Microsoft PowerPoint 97/2000/XP file format. Do you want to save the document in this format anyway?"
I believe this sets the expectation that mp3 might be such content.

ISSUE 2: Flash format: MP3 file does not play in Flash
SG's steps: repro in both versions of Open Office
JF steps: repro in both versions of Open Office

ISSUE 3: Slides do not change automatically
No repro steps given. Is this a separate issue? I could not find an existing report on this.

Dinesh Rangarajan (telldinunow@gmail.com) Apr 11, 2015: Retest using 4.1.1, reproducible, Power point 2010 does not open ppt file.

Tested using:
•	Windows 7 Home Premium 32-bit
•	Apache OpenOffice 4.1.1 - AOO411m6(Build:9775)-Rev.1617669 2014-08-13 09:06:54(Mi, 13 Aug 2014)
•	Microsoft PowerPoint Version 14.0.7145.5000 (32 bit)- Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2010
•	Shockwave Flash Object Version 11.1.102.63 ActiveX (Internet Explorer 11 Version: 11.0.9600.17691 Updated Version: 11.0.17)

Successfully replicated the bug using the 4.1.1 build.

Using Microsoft PowerPoint 2010 the ppt file opens but does not play the music as reported originally.

Using Internet Explorer 11 (with Flash Shockwave Active X add-on) the swf file opens but does not play the music as reported. Internet Explorer was used to open the swf file directly.

Document compatibility would matter to customers who build and share presentations. The sharing is very common in corporates who have intranet/web portal setup. Orientation, Health & Safety etc. presentation often include music components.

Big “Value addition” since PowerPoint does not ship with “export to swf” capability.
Comment 7 Dinesh Rangarajan 2015-04-11 22:30:27 UTC
(In reply to Dinesh Rangarajan from comment #6)

Follow-up Test:

The HTML document export did not play any music. HTML Folder content did not show the music file. No links in the HTML scripts for a music file. No messages indicating that multimedia component would not work/export.

File -> Export;
Save as Type: HTML Document (OpenOffice Impress)
HTML Export (Screen 1) Assign Design = New Design -> Create
