1. File - New - Presentation
2. Click on "Click to add text"
3. Insert - Object - OLE Object... - Object type=OpenOffice 4.0.0 Formula - OK
4. Type vec F = m times vec a
5. Highlight equation and Format - Font Size... - Base size=24pt - OK
6. Click on slide

Equation is not centered horizontally but deviates to the right.

The effect is more or less Reproducible with  "AOO 4.0.1 RC3  – German UI / German locale  [ Rev. 1524958 2013-09-20 11:40:29]" on German German WIN7 Home Premium (64bit)", Common 4.0-dev User Profile

My steps:

1. open attached sample document
   Slide with  some measure lines appears
2. Menu 'Insert -> Object -> Formula'
   Formula input appears
3. In formula input area type a simple dot
4. Click into the sheet
   Formula center is x/y  13,16 / 10,22 cm (too far to the left, too far to top)
   you see my result in sheet 2
5. Additionally insert a Chart object
   Will be inserted, center position is x / y   14 / 10,5
   Exactly centered to sheet size 28x21cm
   You see my result in Sheet 3
6. Additionally insert a Text document objecr
   Will be inserted, center position is x / y   14 / 10,5
   Exactly centered to sheet size 28x21cm
   You see my result in Sheet 4

So indeed the Formula is not in center, different to other objects.

Additional info
a) My observations are also reproducible with DRAW
b) When I try reporter's steps I see the formula center at
   x / y  14,79 / 10,53
c) repeating reporter's test with text size 6:
   x / y of center is 13,58cm/ 10,38
d) c) repeating reporter's test with text size 40:
   x / y of center is 15,86cm  / 10,84
e) so I can confirm reporter's observations with some more details: formulas 
   with small characters will be inserted too far top / left, with increasing
   text size insertion moves to too far right bottom.
f) I will do tests concerning appearance (version) later 
g) Draw might be more appropriate, we can decide later

Already reproducible with OOo 3.1.1 under WIN, position values are a little different, but character size relation is the same

Well, already in OOo 1.1.5

I think it's not too serious, when you have added alignment icons to a toolbar that can be corrected easily, but of course that's not convenient
