Steps how to reproduce: Attach an arbitrary.pdf to a Bug with Auto-Detection for  mime type, as I did here.
Expected: "application/pdf"
Actual: "application/download"

That carelessness unnecessarily handicaps queries

Additional Info:
(a) My samples are "PDF-1.4"
(b) might be browser related, I use Seamonkey
(c) This one might be concerning

(d) There might be other similar misindications, see 
(e) but sometimes indication seems to work fine, see
    Attachment 80722 [details] for Bug 121296
(f) quick test: I found an attachment.pdf with correct mime type:
    2013-05-23 (Attachment 80722 [details]) 
(g) later attachments.pdf show mime type "application/download" [2]

Seems problem has been fixed with Bugzilla Upgrade to 4.4.2
