Description circulars 2014-05-01 13:49:59 UTC
Customising toolbars is presently a fiddly and slow process. It can take 50 clicks or more to move an icon from one end of a toolbar to other.

Replacing the present, rather dated method with drag and drop for moving icons, and ideally also for installing them, would a welcome enhancement which would retire one of the older and more clunky features, helping to keep AOO contemporary.

An extreme example is that upgrading to AOO 4.0 required over 40 minutes to restore my toolbars, which had been corrupted by the installation.

This idea was first floated in bug 121766 and received encouragement. Sorry for the delay in posting.

Hmm. If I use [Ctrl]+[Alt] (on Linux) and click onto any icon I can drag the "frame" of the icon but without any result. Forgotten feature?

Many thanks! Just tried all obvious key combos on OSX 10.5.8 but cannot drag the frame or anything else.

A while ago, could sometimes drag and drop within the customise window, but stopped because it often crashed AOO. Just had a go now and it seemed to work.

If it is a forgotten feature it is certainly forgotten. See the thread today on users under the title 'no icon for track changes'. It was that which kicked me into posting.

Please explain what you mean.

It is crystal clear what reporter wants :-)

I can confirm mroe's observations (more or less) with "AOO 4.1.0 RC4 – German UI / German locale [AOO410m18(Build:9764) - Rev. 1589052 2014-04-22 11:43:54]" on German WIN7 Home Premium (64bit)", “historic” 4. User Profile used for all predecessor versions:

(a) With <Alt> and Drag&Drop I can move a dotted frame with icon size,
    but without any effect.
(b) I do not have much software what allows to drag and drop icons directly
    in toolbar
(c) But 'Icon <Alt> and Drag&Drop' works with
(c1) MultiProg PLC Programming Software
(c2) SoftMaker FreeOffice
(c3) May be more
Comment 5 Rainer Bielefeld 2014-05-01 16:50:45 UTC
c1): also allows to drag and drop menu items in menu bar
c2): no possibility to drag and drop menu items in menu bar
Comment 6 Rainer Bielefeld 2014-05-01 17:11:51 UTC
Looks like a very old regression-defect. Help in OOo 1.1.5: "You can also move the icon to a new position directly on the toolbar by keeping the Alt key pressed (only under Windows) while dragging it to the desired location.". I can't find such help in 4.1.0

(d) And that really worked, with 1.1.5 I can drag and drop icons directly
    in toolbar.
(e) Already Reproducible with server installation of "OOo 2.0.2
    [680m5 (Build 9011)]" German WIN7 Home Premium (64bit)

Thank you. I knew that it worked earlier but I forgot the version. That's why I tried it. FYE: [Alt] + [left mouse button] is preserved in Gnome for dragging windows. So [Ctrl] + [Alt] + [left mouse button] is assigned.

Many thanks all. Very much appreciated.

If it is of any help, in response to (b) it is a standard feature in OS X for all toolbars and for Apple apps such as iWork.

Just remembered that Firefox has drag and drop icons. Might it be possible to share their software and make the whole task much easier? (Sorry for being slow witted.)

Firefox also has the other highly desirable element of this, yet to be proposed for lack of time: that when adding icons these should be presented on a palette from which they can be added by drag and drop. If this could be incorporated it would really help to bring AOO fully up to date.

Do you need me to put up another enhancement request for the latter, or can it be handled here?

It is broken since 10 years.
