Yes, the file name really is 'Blank'. Example of the File Save As problem.

I opened an .xls file, made some edits and then selected Save As. Changed to an ODS extension and clicked Save. The save button 'flashes' but nothing happens.

I tried to save as an XLS extension with the same effect.

Turning off Automatic file name extension allowed me to save it.

Ah Ha!, I says to myself, I found a work around.

I start writing this post. I decide to try to clear out all the data so I can post a sample here and using my 'work-around I save it. So far so good.

But before I post it I decide to test the new sheet to see if it exhibits the same problem. It does not. Now unchecking 'Automatic file name extension' has no effect.

One last thing to check. I edit the file so that the File --> Save icon become un-greyed-out and click it. IT WORKS. Close and reopen (using Recent Files) and File --> Save As still fails.

But wait! There is more! The file was saved with NO extension! When I try to open it directly from Windows Explorer I get the 'What application do you want to use' prompt, select CALC, and it opens.

Clear as mud?

This may be unrelated, and I am not sure I can articulate the other behavior just yet. But when I have this problem I also have difficulty navigating to other folder. But let's do one at a time.

Until now, I am not able to reproduce the defect.

In AOO 4.1.0 on my Windows 7 system I tried the following steps:
Scenario A:
- Open the attached document - it is an file in Microsoft Excel binary file format.
- Type some text into an arbitrary cell
- Menu File - Save As
--> Save As dialog suggested file name "Blank.xls" and file type "Microsoft Excel 97/2000/XP"
- Choose file type "ODF spreadsheet"
--> suggested file name changed to "Blank.ods"
- hit Save button
--> document saved under file name "Blank.ods" in ODF file format.
As already mentioned the defect was not observed with the given sample document

Scenario B:
- Using Microsoft Excel 2003 to create a sample spreadsheet document in Microsoft Excel binary file format - file name "testsheet-2003.xls"
- Open the newly created file in AOO
- Type some text into an arbitrary cell
- Menu File - Save As
--> Save As dialog suggested file name "testsheet-2003.xls" and file type "Microsoft Excel 97/2000/XP"
- Choose file type "ODF spreadsheet"
--> suggested file name changed to "testsheet-2003.ods"
- hit Save button
--> document saved under file name "testsheet-2003.ods" in ODF file format.

@John Schroeder:
- Could you provide a sample document and/or the steps to reproduce the described defect?
- What do you mean by "Changed to an ODS extension..."? Did you changed the file type or did you only change the file name?

I could attach several because I am having this problem repeatedly now. The two that come immediately to mind contain information i do not care to make public and, as I said, I can not edit and save them as something different.

I also monitor the IBM internal Community and have seen others complaining of the same behavior. So i tend to think it is not something in the file or file format itself. It has something to do with how AOO interacts with Windows.

For instance. I have seen a scenario where I try to open a file that I know resides in a particular folder. But after hitting File --> Open I can not navigate to the folder.

Finally, I have a hunch that what I am seeing is not the refusal to ssave or navigate but the fact that it is taking AOO a very, very, very long time to accomplish it. I started writing this because I had just experienced the behavior I just described. I had switched away from AOO while still in the 'failing' condition. Lo and behold when I just switched back Explorer had opened the folder and I was able to save.

And for what it is worth, I changed the file Type. Not just the name. I will report more if I find more.

Another person on the IBM Internal Chat have confirmed my suspicion. Files are saving but only after a very, very long wait. Bumping up the importance.

I, too, was NOT able to reproduce the defect.
AOO 4.1.0, Windows 7, tried:

- open .xls file in Calc
- make changes
- File, Save As..., file_name.xls, Save as type: ODF Spreadsheet(.ods)(*.ods)
- Automatic file name extension is checked by default
- hit Save
- no problem...document saved under file name file_name.ods

Also tried:

- File, Save As..., file_name.xls, place cursor manually on file name area
- change manually the extension to .ods while Save as type: Microsoft Excel 97/2000/XP (.xls)(*.xls) is selected by default
- Automatic file name extension is checked by default
- hit Save
- gives dialog box: This document may contain formatting...in Microsoft Excel 97/2000/XP file format. Do you want to save the document in this file format anyway?
- give choice of "Keep Current Format" or "Save in ODF Format" button
- either choice works.

Hi, I observe a related issue with OO 4.1.1, Windows 7. It is always reproduceable, and did not happen with versions 4.0.x and older.

Open a file xxx-12.12.14.ods, make some changes and Save As xxx-14.12.14 (with automatic extensions enabled). The changed file is saved as xxx-14.12.14 (instead of xxx-14.12.14.ods, e.g. without the .ods suffix). Windows sees it as a *.14 file and shows it as xxx-14.12, offering media player to open it.

This is 'new behaviour' since 4.1.1, and is annoying especially when people using OO to maintain their office documents are forced to re-name them after saving.
