Description Javier 2015-04-03 10:29:04 UTC
Hi,

I'm working in a "Aranese" spell checker, but i need a new Language and locale in openoffice.

oc-ES (Aranese)

You have more information about "Aranese" in
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aranese_dialect

Thanks

@Andrea:
You seem to have a good overview about languages. Can you help here? Thanks.

This is my first time on bz.apache.org. I'm not an expert in languages, I'm just a computer engenier, but if you think than I can help you, I can try.

Adding a language can basically mean two things:
- Defining it for the user interface only (i.e., menus are in language XYZ)
- Defining it as a document language (i.e., documents are in language XYZ)

We are in the latter case here, since we are talking about a spell-checker. This is the most complex case since, for interoperability, we need to settle on a code that is recognized.

OpenOffice only supports the classic aa-BB schema, where "aa" is typically the ISO-639-1 code and "BB" is the geographical area; so "it-CH" stands for: Italian (it) as spoken in Switzerland (CH).

So you are proposing to use "oc-ES" for Aranese? "oc" is ISO 639-1 for Occitan and I understand the two are related but not completely the same.

Here's the current situation for Occitan with source code pointers (this one is a bit complex since apparently a rename occurred in the past):

http://opengrok.adfinis-sygroup.org/source/xref/aoo-trunk/main/i18npool/source/isolang/isolang.cxx#398
oc-FR is defined as LANGUAGE_OCCITAN_FRANCE which obsoletes LANGUAGE_USER_OCCITAN

http://opengrok.adfinis-sygroup.org/source/xref/aoo-trunk/main/i18npool/inc/i18npool/lang.h#430
LANGUAGE_USER_OCCITAN is still defined as LANGUAGE_OCCITAN_FRANCE

http://opengrok.adfinis-sygroup.org/source/xref/aoo-trunk/main/svtools/source/misc/langtab.src#217
the English name "Occitan" is given to LANGUAGE_USER_OCCITAN, with the result that OpenOffice will use "Occitan" to refer to oc-FR.

Javier: since you are proposing to add oc-ES and call it "Aranese", can you provide some further arguments here? As it is now, it would seem reasonable to add oc-ES and call it "Occitan (Spain)", but I know these issues are very complex both from a linguistic and political point of view at times, so I'd love to have more information. Once we have clear what we want to do, this is indeed easy enough for you to provide a patch if you wish to try yourself!

Aranese (Occitan: Aranés) is a standardized form of the Pyrenean Gascon variety of the Occitan language spoken in the "Aran Valley", but it has some differences.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Occitan_language

Aran Valley is the only territory in Spain where Occitan is spoken. The other Occitan speakers are in France and Italy.

The development of linguistic policies in the Aran Valley is the competence of the 'Conselh Generau' [General Council] which is the valley's organ of self-government. The first orthographical rules which regulated the written fixation of Aran appeared in 1983.

Later Catalan legislation recognised Aranese as the language of the Aran Valley and has been official in Catalonia and all official the documents when they refer to Occitan language in Spain use the term Aranese.

I think that the correct variable declaration is:

 "Aranese"; LANGUAGE_OCCITAN_SPAIN;

makings reference to oc-ES

Reset the assignee to the default "issues@openoffice.apache.org".
