Would it be possible to alter the formula editor in such a way that symbols are
entered the same way as in the writer?

That would be a great help in writing chemical equations, since there are a few
freeware fonts around, and it is easier to install a font than editing  the
synbol palette in the formula editor.

Should be possible without a huge amount of changes.
