it would be useful to be able to access data over http and use it in cell
references.

example: you might have a servlet-based web application that does budgeting.  an
accountant might want to use some of those services in a spreadsheet.  We might
use a cell formula like this:

   =(http://intra.example.org/budgeting/GetLabor?quarter=2002q2)

this would access the GetLabor servlet and return the labor cost for the second
quarter of 2002, which the accountant could then use in the spreadsheet for his
own purposes.

From the organization's perspective, this has several benefits: 

1) it allows reuse of server-based logic in desktop apps.

2) sometimes organizations have logic redundantly scattered throughout office
documents, but a wholesale reimplementation of all the spreadsheet functionality
as a web app can be a huge job.  this feature would allow the developers at
example.com to move the logic over to (say) servlets gradually, and use them
immediately within the existing spreadsheets.

OpenOffice.org Issue Tracker - Feedback Request.

The Issue you raised has the status 'New' pending further action, but has not
been updated within the last 4 years. Please consider re-testing with one of the
latest versions of OOo, as the problem(s) may have already been addressed.
Either use the recent stable version: http://download.openoffice.org/index.html
or consider trying the new OOo 3 BETA (still in testing):

To grep the issues easier via "requirements" I put the issues currently lying on
my owner to the owner "requirements".
