OOo program files are just that - program files. They can be replaced easily if 
there is a system problem. 
OOo user files and templates are data. They are very important. They should not 
be stored in the Programs folders, even in a user folder within that. They 
should be stored in a folder that is always backed up - like in Application 
Data in Win2000, or in My Documents for other programs.
So there needs to be an easy way to tell an installation where to put all the 
user files. This needs to be a clear option in the setup process. It is simply 
not adequate to point users to the Tools, Options, Paths facility. It just 
can't be done in a situation where, like I have, a large number of computers 
have to have OOo installed.

I'm not shure what's requested here. OOo store the user data and
settings in <OOo_inst_dir>/user/... I've never seen an application
that asks me where to store these files. I think Tools | Options is
the way other software does.

Agreed that, for instance, Word does it via Tool, Options. But Word 
has 8 options. OOo has 21 making already very complex. And Word 
guesses sensibly on WinNT, or Win 2k by putting the user files in the 
user area - under Application Data. What is needed is a simple way to 
push all the OOo User files and the Share if wanted into the data 
area of the computer, not in the program area.

Hi, I'm not sure if it's correct to append it to _this_ existing issue...but see
yourself:

I use OOo 2.0.1 on Win2k and am a little unhappy about the handling of paths for
opening and saving documents.

a) Obviously, we can set one working directory for *all* subapplications of OOo
(Writer, Calc, ...) and its various document types, at least as I can find it
under Tools-Options-OpenOffice-Paths.
Since I am used to organize my data by document types, I would like to be able
to save text documents in one directory, spreadsheets in another, presentations
in a third etc. - meaning paths should be configurable in each subapplication.
Of course, the applications' Open-file-dialogues may filter the view by .odt,
.ods and more, but it stays restricted.

b) I can't find any option to toggle, that OOo shall *always* save/load to the
directory which you have set under Tools...Paths.
When I choose Open or Save, the dialogue window shows the last directory I have
used, e.g. when I have saved the last single document as an exception on the
Desktop or disk drive a:\.
I would like to have the option that OOo by default offers you to open from
(save to) my set *standard* working directory (path), not the last one used.

To grep the issues easier via "requirements" I put the issues currently lying on
my owner to the owner "requirements".
