Issue 16758

Summary: The function 'autoincrement' should also consider common used textstrings added to numbers (like 1'st', 2'nd', 3'rd' , 4'th'...). MS Excel does this.

Description philmperry 2003-07-13 02:00:02 UTC
If you put "1st Qtr" into a cell, and copy-drag the cell, the text of the new
cells will be "2st Qtr", "3st Qtr", "4st Qtr", "5st Qtr", etc. Three problems
here: the "st" should be (language-dependent, of course) "nd", "rd", "th", etc.
Always having "<n>st" simply doesn't cut it. For English, anything ending in 1
(ex. ending in 11) should be "st", ending in 2 (ex. ending in 12) should be
"nd", ending in 3 (ex. ending in 13) should be "rd", and otherwise should be
"th". Second problem: Quarters ("Qtr" or "Quarter(s)") should wrap around after
4: 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 1st, etc. At least, that's how Excel does it (open to
debate: configure to allow 5th Qtr, etc., and to allow wrap around at 4 but
increment year (e.g. "4th Qtr 97", "1st Qtr 98", ...)). Third problem: "st" is
displayed as superscript, but only for "1st". I would leave it as regular text.

Besides quarters ("Qtr[s]" or "Quarter[s]"), the same problems (except
for the wrap around at 4) apply to autoincremented text like "1st
Street", "2st Street" [sic].

This is not a bug, but a missing feature. The autoincrement function
doesn't know anythink about quaters and spelling. This function does
only increment the number. For getting the wished result it would be
nessesary to implement a special sortlist for quaters.
