In MS Excel you have the ability to center text across selected cells by
selecting the cells and choosing format>cells>alignment>horizontal>center across
selection.

This is a feature I use in MS Excel all the time and I greatly miss in OO Calc.
I tend to avoid merging cells because of their added complexity to the
spreadsheet. I am sure that there are many people (particularily ex-MS users)
who would greatly appreciate this feature.

Thanks,
Tim

It is amazing how many inconveniences I just "put up with" and don't
mention when the adoption of a "fix" would really make OOo much better
and easier for the user. This is one of those I would also recommend
as it has been a bit irritating to me when I discovered it.

I hope it is adopted for Calc.

In Calc you can merge cells and then align centered, if wanted. This enhancement
will not get implemented additionally.

Although merged cells is another way to get the centered titles to center on a
page, I personally, from experience, have always avoided merged cells as they
generally get in the way of inserting columns, rows, cells. I find merging cells
tends to stifle workflow due to their intrisic complexity.

This `center across selection` is a very simple and useful formatting property
that I have in pretty much every spreadsheet I have made since moving to wysiwyg
spreadsheets back in the mid 90's. I've written hundreds of spreadsheets and
they all look great because of this feature.

Please re-open this one for a low priority enhncement into the 2.0 codeline.
This easily fit's the "Q" project concept 3.1.2 - Usability.

Thanks for your time and interest.

Merging cells is NOT the same as center across selection. It is not at all
compatible with Excel's "center across selection". What's worse if you edit a
spreadsheet with Calc that someone else created with Excel and it contains
"center across selection" formatting, Calc will change it to "merge cells". When
the creator tries to open the spreadsheet again in Excel, Calc has screwed up
the formatting! This is not what anyone would call compatibility. I would
request this bug be reopened and the feature added. Yeah, it's that important,
if you want to be compatible with Excel that is.

Hi,

One more for re-opening this issue....

Center cells across acros selection is really better than merging cells. As
already said by many user in this issue... merging cell add complexity to the
spreadsheet ( especially if you want to move, add or delete row, cols or cells)...
Beyond Excel compatibiliy ... this fonctionnality will really add more usability
to OOo.

Please re-open ... but perhaps it will be more efficient to open a new issue ;-)

Kind regards

Hi
since few time i try to teach OOo to users of MSO. It's quite boring having
people always screaming : "i did this with W. or E. isn't it possible to do it
with OOo ?" and trying to explain them the differences beetween those two
softwares. So i will vote for an issue : sometimes, i think it's easier to
developp (euh, i'm not sure but i believe in developpers, many thanks to them)
the same function that MSO than to change mentalities(-;
PS : excuse my english

Thanks

Thank you to re-open this enhancement for 3.x branch

Happy new year 2009!

It's not possible to delete a column if the cells are merged (Excel can do it!).
It's necessary to merge, unmerge...
This feature would be a solution in a way.
Please re-open!

I agree. Just started using OpenOffice in hopes of switching from Excel and
this is the third formatting item that is in Excel but not here. Quite a
surprise. :-(

And this one is a real pain.

Please try the newest version. There is no longer a problem to insert or delete
rows and columns across merged cells.

Vote for reopen.

Add center acroos not same merging.

Is the text with shift cell, but cell stands the same.
An very usable in vertical mode.

When you nned to add text, which not shuld steal a cell.
