Suggested Template & Document Dialog mockup none

Description gregjohnson 2003-09-14 10:23:08 UTC
When selecting File->New, width of dialog is determined by the length of most
recently used file names.
When these names are long, the dialog is very wide making it very difficult to
select File->New, or Autopilot, Send, Templates etc

This is not a problem with commands that pop up a seperate dialog, eg Save
As..., Open..., Export..., Properties...

Suggestion:
To make 2nd level options for New, Autopilot, Send, Templates etc easier & more
accurately selectable by reducing mouse travel, especially when mru filenames
are log, pop up a seperate dialog.
Comment 1 pavel 2003-09-14 15:20:45 UTC
Confirmed.
Comment 2 utomo99 2003-09-15 04:03:30 UTC
Yes, I suggest, we can add
New Text documents below new in file menu of Text
New Spreadsheet documents below new in file menu of calc
ETC
Comment 3 pavel 2003-09-15 07:10:13 UTC
I do not think this should be implemented. If it is, the menu is about
20cm... Not an option.
Comment 4 gregjohnson 2003-09-18 01:07:42 UTC
hi guys,
a related issue is the artificial & confusing distinction between New
(Text|Spreadsheet|Drawing|etc) and New Templates & Documents.

New (Text|Spreadsheet|etc) should simply be instances of the Template
& Document class.

Have a look at ms word file->new... for comparison. Advantage of OOo
is that you can get a New "Anything" from what ever app you are in,
and the "Set default" command is just what you want to make any
template/document the default "New Spreadsheet" (better than ms who
insist that the default text doc is always called "normal"), but ms
has a more consistent approach to File->New... & Templates.

Suggestion,
File->New pops up the Templates & Documents dialog.
The Templates & Documents dialog is re-worked slightly as follows:
* the left hand navigation panel is either made a tree or some other
hierarchial ui element, with the top level items being Templates, My
Documents, Samples.
* 2nd level elements are managed as per the current Organise &
Template Management dialog
* Items from "New Document" are moved to "Templates->Default"
* On entering the Template & Documents dialog, focus is set to
Templates->Default, showing items from the old "New Document" item,
ie Business Cards, Drawing, Formula, Labels, Master Document,
Presentation, Spreadsheet, Text Document"

This removes the current confusion between "new simple documents" &
new "templates & documents" & gives access to the deafult simple
documents with one click.

I will attach a mock up of the proposal.

regards,
greg johnson

I think we must make easier to access what people need to use many times.

Open> new is one of the recent things people use.

Maybe good solution need to wait til 2.0, but for amoment we need to
find solution for this.
1. add 1 new menu
New Text documents below new in file menu of OOo Writer
New Spreadsheet documents below new in file menu of OOo calc
This is only additional one menu for each application, so it will not
add so much things in the menu length.
2. Limiting the file name length in the file menu recent list. the
limit must be decided so it still easy to read.

other improvements i think need to be in 2.0

Hello Matthias, as you are working on restructuring some menu, please
take over this ease of use issue. Thank you.

CD: A recent file list which is part of a sub menu can be implemented using the
new popup menu controller feature. I think this can be done within 1-2 days.
