Animated gifs may be optimized (for example with gimp) to reduce size. 
However, these fail to display correctly in ooimpress.

Fore example, the following animated gif fails to display correctly:
http://ipb.u-strasbg.fr/ipb/gitim/research/segmentation_subvoxel/thickness-constraint-1-anim.gif
The unoptimiozed version displays correctly.

@sj: looks like a missing feature in gif import - could you have a look please?
