Description richlv 2003-12-11 13:25:13 UTC
it would be nice if writer had an ability to display comments like word 10 does.
short description :

comment is indicated by some symbol. then a line leads to a box outside text
area where comment itself can be found.

there must be ability to configure parameters (customizeable for document, for
viewing and for every comment individualy) :
1. wether comments are only indicated by some colored block in text wether they
are displayed alongside text;
2. ability configure comment font, box, lines, behaviour of leader lines etc;
3. ability to display author of comments, date etc; also ability to display
comments in different colour depending on author (i believe word does that, but
i'm not sure);
4. ability to choose position of comments (left or righ side);
5. when first time a comment is inserted out-of-text-block confirmation is asked
and it is explained that this would change formatting of the document;
6. ability to configure treshold for comments so that every comment that is over
treshold would be in text and every that is lower - besides the text.

maybe something else, but i can't think of anything right now :)

this would allow easier reviewing of comments and would make commenting more
popular. also makes printing of the document with comments neater and easier for
reading.

confirming, target-milestone: not determined, link issue 6193 to have this
considered as well when changing the handling of comments/notes.

so that this is not forgotten :
also change information could/should be implemented this way (of course, fully
customizeable, the same as comments, ability choose separate settings for
changes/notes etc)

when viewing document with chnages recorded it's pretty hard to read - and if
you disable change displaying you might miss some changes etc.
Comment 6 richlv 2005-03-29 13:30:46 UTC
ok, just additional information - msword apparently resizes the page so that
pagination is not lost and there is a space to show notes/changes.

This really gets in the way of using Open Office for publishing, since editor
comments are often placed in this manner based on what needs to be edited.

Please also make sure that when we print and export to PDF, that we also have
the ability to show the comments in this way so the printout will look like the
page does on

Comment 10 g42fox 2005-12-05 16:00:06 UTC
This is a deal breaker for me. The only reasons I ever use Word is to
collaborate with a number of people who send me Word documents. These are often
full of marginal comments; if I can't read them, reply to them, delete them, and
add comments (or notes) that they can also handle, the software isn't useful to me.
Comment 11 nbinont 2006-01-26 01:53:01 UTC
This would be a really great feature to have. I am a student and some of my
courses invlove the professor (or TA) making comments on my documents.
Unfortunately MS Word is far ahead on this feature. For this reason they can't
use opeoffice files effectively.
Comment 12 aredshaw 2006-03-13 01:30:23 UTC
This one feature is what is keeping me from using OpenOffice as my main word
processing program at work. I am a teacher and for some of my assignments it is
useful to put the comments along side the text so students can see what I was
thinking about a particular passage. It this being worked on?
Comment 13 dsherwin 2006-05-22 16:30:50 UTC
Changing this to enhancement as it is to enchance the current notes functionality.
Comment 14 michael.ruess 2006-05-23 12:25:06 UTC
Assigned back to BH. She is the correct assignment for such "request for
enhancements".

Perhaps this Issue and its votes should be rolled into 6193?

Comment 17 richlv 2006-07-14 15:52:22 UTC
that issue, at least initially, was about allowing comments on sections,
instead of inserting them in text.
it has pretty much drifted in different directions & is hard to read.
also, it is linked by dependancies.

As another comment said, I think Writer's anemic handling of editing/reviewing
functions is a dealbreaker for me at this point. I'm a professional copy editor,
and I rely heavily on the sophisticated copyediting functionality of MS Word.
Writer is 10 years behind Word in this regard.

In addition to the other enhancements suggested, I would like to have the
ability to (1) delete all notes/comments in a text (without necessarily deleting
all the recorded changes); (2) show/don't show comments/notes by user; (3) show
comments/notes without displaying recorded changes; (4) show recorded changes
without displaying comments/notes; (5) "anchor" comment to a phrase/block of
text rather than as single insertion point (I often attach an author query to a
word, sentence, or even paragraph to indicate "this is the
word/phrase/sentence/paragraph I am talking about." I'll see if I can produce a
screenshot to show what I mean.
Comment 20 davewt2007 2007-03-12 22:39:42 UTC
I've posted this on a couple of other related threads so apologies for the spam
but this issue really is the big deal for me so far as OOo is concerned.
__________
I have to agree that the Writer editing tools need an overhaul. They were the
thing that most made me reluctant to ditch word and, while I finally decided to
put up with them, I really would like to see them improved.

To begin with, the method for accepting/rejecting changes on a case by case
basis is really cumbersome when compared with Word. That box that opens up with
the changes listed by time is, so far as I can see, utterly pointless. Why use
that, when it is simply better to scroll through the document?

Secondly, the insert comments feature just doesnt cut the mustard -there also
appear to be problems with comment visibility if the document is then opened in
Word. I do a lot of proof-reading work and 99.9% of my clients use Word - I need
the integration to be seemless because otherwise it looks woefully
unprofessional. When I insert a comment, I don't want a little box in the text
-I want it in the margin. Also, when I select a comment to apply to a peice of
text, I don't want the original text to be invisible when my client opens it in
Word (which has just happened).

Finally, I think that the text crossing out feature when you delete text may
have its uses but most of the time it simply makes the document hard to navigate
and requires me to do a second pass with the changes turned off. This allows me
to do a final edit but it takes for ever to delete anything this way.

Overall, I think OOo is excellent and I don't want to be so negative -but text
reviewing tools are very important to me (and to many others I'm sure) -and I
don't want to be yearning for Word anymore.

Thanks,

David

Work on a new notes implementation has started
Comment 23 prayingmantis78 2007-05-09 13:01:16 UTC
together with a good bibliographical tool integration (that has same
functionality as Reference Manager or Endnote) this is what is holding me back
from switching to OOo. As a scientist I collaborate with lots of people and
jointly write manuscripts or proposals. Keeping track of of changes or comments
is critical, and the way OOo is handling this is annoying and unproductive.

The way MS Word is handling comments and additions/deletions (with those
balloons in the margins) makes this all very easy, so I would suggest OOo
developers to take a very good look on how they did this, before trying to
reinvent the wheel.
Comment 24 richlv 2007-05-10 16:04:24 UTC
i understand that this process has just now started, but maybe there already is some wiki or spec
on this ?
it would be nice to make this at least close to perfect with the first time ;)

of course, given the huge interest, that might also produce a lot of unnecessary flaming, but there
have been good and not so good suggestions in all these issues, so putting them up in a sensible
and coherent manner might help when designing this feature.
Comment 25 zdenekhrib 2007-05-25 17:32:03 UTC
As this issue is quite crucial for everyone, I guess this should be out ASAP.
Just plain viewing should be enough. Could be done as some marking in the text
with fulltext appearing if clicked on.

BTW in a widescreen world margins can be quite large so it may be possible and
desirable to split the comment margin space in several columns
