Description ashforma 2004-01-01 20:59:52 UTC
In MS Word, as part of the Grammar/Speel Check I can obtain the Flesch-Kincaid
Grade Level readability and Flesch Reading Ease statistics.

Is there a similar functionality in OpenOffice?

I have searched the help documentation but it doesn't even recognize these
readibility features, so, a, I correct in assuming OpenOffice can't do this?

HI->MRU: Pass to BH when this is an ENHANCEMENT

MRU->BH. looks like this feature can only be provided in package with a grammar
check. The Flesh/Kincaid statistics give information about the complexity of a
text. Here's what I've found about it:

Flesch Score (Flesch Reading Ease and Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level) -
The Flesch scores (Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level and Flesch Reading Ease) are based
on the average number of syllables per word and words per sentence. The
Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level score rates text based on the U.S. high school grade
level system (i.e. a score of 7.0 would mean a 7th grader should be able to
comprehend the text). The Flesch Reading Ease score is based on a 100 point
scale; the higher the score, the easier it is to comprehend.

Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level:

(.39 x ASL) + (11.8 x ASW) – 15.59

Flesch Reading Ease:

206.835 – (1.015 x ASL) – (84.6 x ASW)

ASL = average sentence length (number of words divided by the number of sentences)

ASW = average number of syllables per word (number of syllables divided by
number of words)

I understand the concepts and how the results are caluclated, I use it
regularly in MS Word. When do you think this feature and a grammar checker will
be added to OO? They are very obvious omissions right now.

I agree that this should be added. The ASW may be a bit tricky depending on
the dictionaries available.

There are other reading indices available, perhaps one of them would be easier
to implement quickly

To grep the issues easier via "requirements" I put the issues currently lying on
