Sorry for the obtuse Summary line...

Here's the issue. When I start up OOo Impress with the "simpress" invocation
with no file specified, it starts with the "AutoPilot Presentation" window. I
then select the "Open existing presentation" radio button and get a box with a
list of recently edited files in it (I have one in my case...) and the "<Other
position>" list item. When I single click on the file I want to load/edit (i.e.
select it from the list), the list item is highlighted, but none of the buttons
on the "AutoPilot Presentation" window change state to guide me to the next step
of opening my document. Only the "Help", "Cancel", and "Create" buttons are
active, the "<<Back" and "Next>>" buttons remain greyed out.

I can open the file by double clicking on the list item, but I figured that out
by trial and error (okay... it took me two seconds of realizing I was stuck
before I tried double clicking... but others might not be so bold as I ;-).

I would have expected the "Next>>" button to become active (after I made a
selection from the list, anyway), or for the "<<Back"/"Next>>" pair to change to
an "OK" button when I selected the "Open existing presentation" radio button
(that would remain greyed out until I selected something from the list). That
way, a single click to select the list item would allow me to press "OK" and
load my document.

To grep the issues easier via "requirements" I put the issues currently lying on
