I recently began working in Germany again and took some old english documents
as a template. I wondered why the spell checker did not work, although
everything in the Options was correctly set.

It came out that each paragraph can also be assigned to a language and this was
the problem. Once I switches the paragraph styles to the correct language,
everything was fine.

I noticed that many users do have this problem and I think a notice in the
Options / Language Settings Menu woould totally solve this problem. In general,
I like the idea of having the possibility to assign each paragraph another
language.

I have found this to be true in OpenOffice 2.0 Beta 680. I had to go into Edit
Paragraph Style... -> Font and change the language to English.

I have no idea why it does this, I only speak English and I do not have any
other languages installed on my computer. I have attached the document in its
corruptive form...I don't know if it will help or not.

I have a similar problem with German and English. I have an English
installation and installed the German dictionary on top. I opened a document of
german and tried to spell check it as German. However, while the spellchecker
shows (English(UK)) when English(UK) is selected, it shows () when
German(Germany) is select and no spellcheck is possible. If all the text is
selected, then Format... Character... and the text changed to German(Germany),
the spellcheck works OK. As far as I can tell this only affects the German
dictionary, others, e.g. Italian, seem to work OK.
