The createStatusIndicator in Writer is called from 

SwDocShell::SaveAs( const uno::Reference < embed::XStorage >& xStor )

I can't see a way to access the MediaDescriptor here because no Medium is available.

You are right ... This is a problem of all sfx based application code. We will
establish a new way for loading documents using e.g. an SfxMedium allways.
That's why this task was added to the cws[progress01]. Please stay tuned till
you will get a notification about all needed changes inside this area. After
that you can fix your code.
