Description IngridvdM 2004-05-03 16:12:12 UTC
So far the size of a legend is always automatically calculated. In future it
should be possible to force the legend to have an explicit size. The detailed
behaviour has still to be specified.

This is a very useful feature. Is any work being done on this?
Comment 6 drichard 2008-01-02 13:58:52 UTC
We (Largo) are getting some grief over this missing feature. You should be able
to resize in the "Position And Size" UI and also by grabbing the green corner
handles and stretching it larger.

Anything happening about this.

It's seriously annoying. Some like size 5 text that I can't change where some
is like size 26 or something.
Comment 11 guraknugen 2009-02-27 04:56:16 UTC
I think the obvious way for this is that the font automatically adepts to the
selected size of the legent. Maybe also the space between lines. That way I can
easily adjust those two parameters by just draging the green handles, which I
think would be very convenient.
Comment 12 droetker 2009-02-27 11:01:51 UTC
No, I'm definietly not your opinion.
That way it would decrease your possibilities and block you doing the layout the
way YOU want.
If you change the font size with the site of the egend, you can't control wether
it should word-wrap or not.
You yhould be able to control the font size for Legends, and you simply should
be able to resize the legend-> that resizing should then automatically word-wrap
the lines.
Comment 13 fmyhr 2009-04-19 22:30:08 UTC
It's already simple to change legend text size.

It might be nice to scale legend text size with legend size. But it's hardly
critical.

The important thing is allow the user to set an arbitrary legend size,
especially one with narrow width and larger height to force labels into one
column (one symbol per line) rather than the inflexible current layout with all
symbols in a single row. And, changing the legend font size should NOT change
the legend size.
Comment 14 remo00 2009-05-23 09:44:38 UTC
this issue is quite annoying.
Being not able to modify manually the size of the legend lead to unnecessary
wrapping of word inside it.

The most important thing is allow the user to set legend size
Comment 15 lamarcbr 2009-06-01 17:33:32 UTC
Eech! I came across this limitation this morning. Not good. The Community may want
to work on things like the Renaissance project, but until basic items like this
are addressed, using Open Office will remain frustrating. This issue has my vote!
Comment 16 ypz88 2009-06-07 13:28:28 UTC
This bug really makes OOo inferior to it's counterpart from MS..
I Hope that's will be fixed soon.
Comment 17 statusquo 2009-06-12 11:26:41 UTC
I agree with everyone that this is seriously annoying. Is there any work-around
to this?

hmm. i really hoped that with chart2 issues like this would be long gone...
i'm attaching a screenshot to explain the annoyance level users can expect to
reach when using charts

Comment 21 anadv 2009-10-22 19:08:18 UTC
I considered myself a happy "conversion" story until I stumbeled with this, I'm
sticking with openoffice for my thesis, but I hope I don't regret it. I've been
having a really hard time navigating around this one. I also thried Gnumeric for
charting but I can't make it display the values in the (for example) bars of the
bar chart...
I'd apreciate it if someone solved this, thanks
Comment 22 camillem 2009-10-23 12:18:55 UTC
This feature would also help for regressions like Issue 80377
Comment 23 margin_auto 2009-10-30 15:17:53 UTC
It's not so much the resizing itself, than changing the layout between one row
and to (or more) rows, what should be modifyable by the user.
Comment 24 rnhainsworth 2009-11-02 07:18:19 UTC
The detail of the changes discussed here are hiding the wood from the trees.
When you have developed a diagram or chart that is good, you want to use it (for
us in a report in Writer). That means working with all the format options of the
chart to increase readiblity and impact (line colours/thicknesses, axis
labelling, etc).

The legends associated with lines/objects are essential to readibility. But
their main format characteristics cannot be directly edited in OpenOffice. The
format characteristics can be changed by the autoformating routines, so why is
it impossible to provide an interface for direct user interaction. I cannot get
the "look" I want easily, if at all. This leaves a bad taste.

I want to be able to change char size, dimensions of legend, layout of legends,
line breaks within legends, dimension of legend box. In short, I want to be able
to use the standard format tools on the legends as if they were text objects.

I first submitted requests for changes in Chart after working with Office 1, and
legend formatting was one of them. It is now Office v3.1 and the issue remains
unresolved.

Surely the time has come for Chart issues to rise in priority.

It is really annoying. As a result I had to search and use another program to
draw the same chart for my work. I'm shocked.
Please, solve this. Or give the ability to place in the chart any simple text-box.

This is really annoying. Nice looking graph, shit looking legend. I registered
for the express purpose of voting on this!
Comment 28 tjohn 2010-06-17 16:57:29 UTC
A problem since 2005?

I'm currently using scalc for spreadsheet.

However, because of the inability to change chart legend objects I have to save
in xls format, then use Excel to edit chart legends. Pain in the ...

My company will not switch to OpenOffice until this is fixed, even though I've
pretty much sold management on the change.

So we still pay for M$ Office which keeps a lot of people here from even trying
OpenOfficeOrg as long as M$ is available.

This is not an annoyance here - this is a blocker preventing adoption of OO.

Comment 29 doits 2010-06-18 20:08:56 UTC
had this problem just now, too - first time i created a graph with oo. all went
good until trying to format the legend at the end. this is really annoying and
stops me from using it for other graphs. please fix it!

Can you provide instructions on how to apply this patch? I'm willing to bug
report for it but not sure how to get it applied :) I'm running OpenOffice 3.3 RC1

Comment 36 IngridvdM 2010-11-16 14:38:48 UTC
@regina, CWS chart52 is created and the patch applied, so we can work there
further :-) I hope to finish my current feature implementation soon, so I can
concentrate on this one then.
Comment 37 IngridvdM 2010-11-16 14:54:12 UTC
@jmadero, the patch is something that needs to be applied to the code and then
be compiled. It is nothing that can be applied to an office installation
directly, sorry. But thanks for the offer to test! :-)
However this is a very early state in development, somewhat to early for broader
testing.

Excel import/export of XLS and import of XLSX/XLSM/XLSB implemented.

Thanks a lot Regina! Thomas, please have a look at Reginas test descriptions and
results. I think this is a very good basis for the test case specifications.
Please verify in CWS chart52.
