if I load a Word document with animated images (GIF) and I save the documenti in
HTML format i get a document with static images (PNG) - see the attached file.

I can confirm this. when we save as to html all images converted to png. so it 
lost the animations. 
I test using OOo 1.1.2rc2 win xp

Utomo > ES:
why we convert animated gif to png, so it lost the animated ? is there any 
legal problems with GIF format ?

ES->SJ: as discussed. MS saved animated gifs *in* png. Apparently we export the
same but some browsers just stuck on the PNG magic without noticing the
animation. Where do we want to go today? ;)
