Description ivand 2004-07-17 22:31:37 UTC
A repeating problem occurs with how to write series of equations aligned along
to "=" sign (or other symbols) as usual in a professionally printed literature
(see issues 5998, 29053). There is a good workaround for it, but you have to
know the things *really* well first to reach the goal. That's why I would
recommend to add a "cookbook tip" in on-line help (that's where I - an average
Joe - go when I have a problem; I had no idea there was some FAQ and it is quite
hard for me to reach that as I am off-line most time).

My tip is to add at Index: "Vzorec: zarovnání podle symbolu" (probably something
like "Formula: aligning along a symbol") I use a Czech version) and to the same
page as "aligning formulas to the left, right, centered" please add the
following paragraph (please correct my English):

TIP: Aligning A Series Of Formulas Along Equal Sign

To align several formulas along the = sign, you can use a matrix. Follow the
example: (Note the "{}" brackets around the equal sign.)

matrix{
alignr sin^2 x + cos^2 x#{}={}#alignl 1 ##
alignr cos^2 x #{}={} #alignl 1 - sin^2 x
}

In Czech:
TIP: Jak zarovnat několik rovnic pod sebou podle rovnítka
Chcete-li zarovnat několik rovnic pod sebou podle rovnítka, použijte k tomu
matici. Postupujte podle následujícího příkladu: (Všimněte si složených závorek
kolem rovnítka.)

matrix{
alignr sin^2 x + cos^2 x#{}={}#alignl 1 ##
alignr cos^2 x #{}={} #alignl 1 - sin^2 x
}

OOPS! Please reassign from "How To" to "Online help"
Comment 2 scarr 2004-08-18 15:25:09 UTC
I'll add this to the FAQ area, then assign it to the Online Help component. Thanks.
Comment 3 scarr 2004-11-15 21:12:33 UTC
I have added this to the User FAQ area. Please find it located here:

http://documentation.openoffice.org/user_faq/formula/022.html

Thanks for the entry. I am going to put this into the Online Help category now.

I am afraid there are two overtypes. Please replace ALIGN1 with ALIGNL.
Comment 5 diane 2004-11-16 12:48:59 UTC
The faq question has a typos and should be changed to "How do I align several
formulas along the '=' sign?"
Comment 6 diane 2004-11-22 06:47:31 UTC
Repaired the faq typos reported in the above two entries in both the user_faq
and faqs areas.
Comment 7 Uwe Fischer 2007-07-17 10:56:29 UTC
added the example to file smath/01/03090700.xhp in CWS hcshared10
Comment 8 Uwe Fischer 2007-09-05 14:34:25 UTC
found on index page "formatting in OOo Math", in master m227 -> closed
Comment 9 Uwe Fischer 2007-09-06 14:56:07 UTC
Sorry, wrong window. Found this in hcshared10, not in m227 master
Comment 10 Uwe Fischer 2007-09-06 14:56:47 UTC
fixed in CWS
Comment 11 Uwe Fischer 2007-09-07 10:24:01 UTC
Please verify in CWS hcshared10
index page "formatting in OOo Math"

does not/ no longer/ exist(s)...
Here is a new, or related, problem:
In Misalign.odt, the same formula was pasted in different paragraphs. It aligns
correctly with cc, ee, ff, but not with aa or bb --apparently, because these are
numbered.

The FAQs were moved to the OOo Wiki. Find this FAQ at
http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/Documentation/FAQ/Formula/How_do_I_align_my_equations_at_the_equality_sign%3F

Please submit separate issues, one for each bug that you discover. If the issue
is with the documentation, the "documentation" is the right component to select.
If the issue is with the Math program code, then that is something the
documentation authors cannot change. "Formula editor" is then the correct
component for the issue.
For the outdated links in the web page, the "website" or the "www" component
should be used.
