Deleted DBase-entries are just marked as deleted, but not physically removed. 
The posibility to "compress" a DBase-file is needed to keep filesize small.

confirming, targeting, grabbing - hesta, thanks for the report!

for the record: we once had this feature in StarOffice 5.2, but it got lost due
to technical reasons, and was never re-introduced.
That's really a pitty, since this effectively means that your dBase files will
constantly grow, and continue to contain all the data you deleted years ago ...
You could even call this a privacy issue ...
