Description jsado_sc3 2005-02-26 20:23:27 UTC
Start OOWriter. Type in the word "gauge". Hit 'F7' to start the spell checker.
It highlights "gauge" as an unknown word, and the list of suggestions does not
include "gauge". Click on the button "check word". It says "The word is spelled
correctly". If the word was spelled correctly to begin with, then OOWriter
shouldn't have highlighted it in the first place.

Hello jsado_sc3,
does this also happen with the latest milestone build?
Thank you in advance for checking,
Max

Unfortunately the only files I found on that web site were .rpm and .deb. I run
Gentoo. If you can give me an ebuild that will download and build this load I
can certainly try it out.

After testing, apparently (sorry, I'm not a native speaker!) it looks like
"gauge" is the Britsh word for American English "gage" (after googling on "gauge
+'British English'")...

By default, the "English" builds of OOo come up with US spelling.
You may not have noticed it.

Please check in which language your default documents (Tools - Options -
Language Settings - Languages) and the character language (Format - Character)
is formatted.

My language is indeed set to US. However, looking at the 1976 edition of
Webster's New Collegiate Dictionary shows gauge (as well as gage). The third
definition of gage says it is a variation of gauge. The definition of gauge as I
read it contains just what I originally was using it for in my document.

But regardless there is more to this problem than simply wether this word is in
the correct language set or not. The second part of my problem is that when you
click on that button in the spell check that says (when you hover over it)
"check word", the spell checker says the word is spelled correctly.

So, when you originally go to check the word from oowriter, the spell checker
comes up, but when you check that same word in the spell check, it says it is
spelled correctly. I hope I have explained this better.

This issue is invalid. What you encountered is a feature.

As metioned before, the initial language is set to en_US. The dictionary for
en_US doesn't contain the word "gauge" thus it is marked as misspelled. (and
because it is not known, it cannot appear in the proposed spelling-list)

When you run the spellcheck and tell it to check the word, it searches in the
available dictionaries. If you check the dialog carefully, you'll notice that
the language switches from English (USA) to british english. The
british-dictionary contains the word, thus it is correct.
To apply the change of the language, you have to replace the word (it will then
be marked with en_GB. If you dismiss the dialog without clicking "replace", the
word will still be marked as "en_US" and thus still be marked as misspelled on
subsequent runs of the spellchecker.

You can have the spellcheck search in all dictionaries autmatically when you
chek "check in all languages" in Tools|Options -> language-settings -> linguistic

There's no issue with the actual functionality of the spellchecker. -> invalid.

closing issue.

If you want to have words added to the dictionaries, then please have a look at
the corresponing README-file listed on this page:
http://lingucomponent.openoffice.org/spell_dic.html

If there is no maintainer listed that accepts suggestions, then (and only then)
please file an issue against the "lingucomponent" (not "word processor"). Thank you.
