Description alanucsd 2005-05-18 18:22:42 UTC
In the tools > customize > keyboard dialog, if you select the category "edit",
you find two copies of the "delete contents" function, with absolutely no
indication of what the difference between the two might be.

Hi,

the mentioned entry is also present in the writer dialog, at least the double
one in Calc should be removed.

Comment 6 carsten.driesner 2005-06-15 11:42:48 UTC
cd->liz: I have recently collected some information about the two functions
which have the same label. If you need more info about these two functions,
please contact NN.

".uno:ClearContents"
en-US: "Delete Contents"
de: "Inhalte löschen"
It's only defined and implemented in the Calc module. The function removes the
content of a cell, but doesn't touch the formatting. There is no user
interaction required (no dialog).

".uno:Delete"
en-US: "Delete C~ontents..."
de: "Inhalte l~öschen..."
It's defined for all modules (including Calc). The function is triggered if the
user presses the "Del" key on the keyboard. Writer removes the character right
to the cursor. Calc opens a dialog that asks the user to select which data
should be removed from the current cell.

Thanks for the excellent explanation, Carsten.

It sounds to me like the terms may not be clear enough in both cases.

".uno:ClearContents"
en-US: "Delete Contents"
de: "Inhalte lschen"
"It's only defined and implemented in the Calc module. The function removes the
content of a cell, but doesn't touch the formatting."
So maybe we should call it something Calc-specific like "Delete Cell Contents"

".uno:Delete"
en-US: "Delete C~ontents..."
de: "Inhalte l~schen..."
"It's defined for all modules (including Calc). The function is triggered if the
user presses the "Del" key on the keyboard. Writer removes the character right
to the cursor."
So why do we say "contents" at all, when it also appears in Writer where there
is no "container" like a cell to contain "contents"?

Still researching this...

liz->CD:

please change the first one so it says:
.uno:ClearContents"
en-US: "Delete Contents" ---> "Delete Cell Contents"
de: "Inhalte lschen" ---> "Zellinhalte löschen
KeyId 239241
PRJ officecfg
Filename registry\data\org\openoffice\Office\UI\CalcCommands.xcu
Build SRC680
GID ..CalcCommands.UserInterface.Commands..uno:ClearContents
LID Label

leave the second one from above as is:
".uno:Delete"
en-US: "Delete C~ontents..."
de: "Inhalte l~schen..."
because it is a menu entry in calc and too many things rely on it. In Writer it
is unimportant.

cd: Accepted.
Comment 10 alanucsd 2008-05-02 16:54:22 UTC
This defect is still present in 2.3.1. There really should be some
differentiation between the two Delete Contents commands that are listed.

Actually could be closed as duplicate of issue 99468 but is so far "started"
with string review and so on that we may implement it before meta issue.
So setting "depends on"
