This may be more of a feature type of thing rather than a defect, but seeing as
how this isn't working as expected I guess it's a defect to me.

I've created a small diagram in Draw. Nothing too fancy, just some boxes with
connecters between them. I save the drawing out, then attempt to embed it into
a Writer document with "Insert > Object > OLE Object".

The drawing shows up, but with a huge amount of white space around it. Attempts
to resize the object alters the image itself, rather than just the box that
contains the image.

The expected results would have the image zoom and box size independant of each
other, with the ability to center on any portion of the objct within the window.

At this time the only work around I have found is to export the draw object as a
PNG file, manually crop the image, then embed as an image. This is less than
optimal as changes to the drawing aren't reflected in the destination document.

I've tested this on both FreeBSD and Windows with OOo1.9m101.

With the OLE in edit mode (double click) you can resize the content by dragging
it . The content size can aslo be altered by the size or tzzomstage you save the
original file. With the OLE in select mode you can resize and move the OLE window.

Sorry, "tzzomstage" should have been "zoomstage".

wg, I now see what you mean. Although this can be tweaked on to make work, this
really shouldn't be considered optimal.

By default, when inserting this drawing as an sxd file it takes the entire width
of the page, beyond the margins. I then converted the drawing to an odg file,
which now takes up ALL the page when inserted, vertical and horizontal.
Starting with a single empty page, inserting a 3 inch high drawing will result
in now having 3 pages with the drawing on page 2.

OOo should at least be making some attempt at a reasonable guess as to how to
fit it on the page. I doesn't need to be perfect, but somewhere in the ballpark
should be what is happening here. At the very least it should fit within the
margins of the destination document.

Lastly, I have to address a usability issue. Now that you've explained to me
that the window when in edit mode can be re-sized I get it. I would have NEVER
gotten it without your explaining this. Maybe I'm just not too bright, but
those 1x1 pixel handles didn't exactly shout, "Hey, I can resize this thing!".
Plus there's the additional ruler I can't figure out how to turn off adding
visual noise to the picture.

With that being said, I would like to reopen this bug. Perhaps it shouldn't be
classified as a defect, but it should be fixed.

I think the problem of the bad fitting in the writer doc is more a problem fo
the writer application. I will reassign this to ask.
Hello, I think this might be a writers problem of how the OLE is inserted. Right?

MRU->WG: that's w rong. the visible area for the object is handed over by the
server application to the container. You will have the same effect when
inserting such a document as OLE into a Calc document.

Reassigned. Couldn't we resize the OLE to the maximum width of the content? It
seems that we takeover the complete width of the draw doc but not the height...

I am also interested in this.

I am going to try to file a bug report to improve writer behavior.

Maybe things will get better this time.
